MODELLING..SCHMODDELING. .IM STILL REASEARCHING
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 11:30 AM
OK...OK i have just spent the morning opening and examining the contents of my next project....a 1:32nd scale FW 190 F-8... so after wiping the drool off the parts, i start to imagine a setting for my beautiful butcher bird.....ok ok .. so being an armour buff, and seeing as this is my first A/C for decades, i let my imagination run riot.....
i have several airfix multipose [figure sets] kits .that are also 1:32nd scale . so i can utilise either the afrika korps set, or the eigth army set with a little milliput to "re-theater"
them for europe, and make a rather tasty diorama...so i conclude that this is an excellent scenario. and start to do some research on the focke wulf......
OMG!!!! there is just SOOOOOOOOOO much stuff out there ,i'm still sifting through it all.... my printer has run out of ink.. how can i decide on a topic for my bird, when the next picture is more interesting than the last one.? i finally think i got a goody when i click on another link and...BAM somthing infinitly more appealing turns up..
what i want to know is how do you guys know when to stop the research and start building.. i know it is a lot simpler when you have a definite marque or model you wish to portray ,,you just look up the info for that particular one and hey presto...
but when you are just trolling the web looking for info and ideas....it dont half make your head hurt....................

You remind me of me! ROTFLMAO! Tongue [:P]

We should talk, maybe we can form a researcher's support group or something. Wink [;)]

cool idea wolfie boy...will the support group dispense pharmacuticals of any kind?...iv'e already developed a strange twitch..and my wife says i,m muttering to myself as i do things around the house, she asked me" what hell are decals?? and what the hell is wrong with you??
we need a group where we can go , and view a beautifully made and finished horrendously expensive piece of model "ART" and the person within the group that is deemed to have addressed their particular malady ,with a modicum of success ..gets to smash it to pieces with a heavy blunt instrument, and the person that hasn't gets to reassemble it for next week?!...NO WTHATS MY IDEA OF A SUPPORT GROUP..[where do i sign up??]

It's funny that you mention smashing models to pieces with heavy blunt instruments...

This could be our group's poster boy...

Deakon, Deakon...
I feel you angst. One can research a subject to death, and forget why you want to build a subject.
If one thinks too much on the details, the larger plan gets ignored.
Solution.
When I build a tank, I already have a primary subject in my head. i like to do SS units, so the
basic is already there. I pick a vehicle; not to consumed about marking and decals, and just build.
For you. I suggest that since this is your first A/C in a few decades, pick a simple RLM pattern and unit markings.
Sometimes the simple ideas are the better.

There comes a point when you must stop the research. What do you want to be, a modeler or a librarian??

Fear not DEAKON, I've been researching a project on and off for almost 20 years and have yet to even start to build! Put your worries on hold and step up to the Virtual Pub! The first one's on me!

The research is all part of the fun. I often sit down at my desk ready to model and log on to have a look for some detail pics or some such thing. The next thing you know I've seen ideas for my next project and have ordered new kits to join the ever increasing pending pile in my loft. As for the original intentions for the evening...well its now 2am and I would wake the missus with the noise from the compressor so back to the drawing board.
I will get round to building that B1 one day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Could FSM start a research forum where we could post links we've found to different subjects. I'm sure there's loads of people like me with pages of bookmarks just waiting t be sharedQuestion [?]

@ mostlyjets.....mines a large malt my m8..i think iv'e finaly decided on a particular ........oh wait look at this one...
and that one........what about this one.......wow this one is nice.........mummmnphhmhhpnpy...twitch twitch......
@ fiasco....you and me both m8y...although research in itself is a highly enjoyable passtime, one can become overinvolved in it ,and loose the plot a bit......."suddenly i came back to myself,i'd been sitting at my computer, clicking through page after page, of in depth details of how to portray a realistic finish to the creases in paratrooper fatigues. when , i noticed my workbench..the paint ..the brushes..the model kit......YES that's it ..i make models.
