PBY-5a Catalina 1/48 info wirin' 4 lites and paint

Hi Diablo31 I dont know much about putting lights on kits but i have seen fibreoptics used with fantastic results and that would seem the way to go but you could also try using L.E.Ds (light emitting diodes) you can get them in different colours and the bulbs produce very little heat....Gregers

diablo - did you ever try lights & if so what did you use and how did they work out?

From experience .....Go for LEDs I once used grain of wheat bulbs in a model and ended up with some heat damage. I should have reduced the voltage, dimmer light but less heat.
I am using LEDs in my model of a B36 red,green,white and blue.

I use RAM LIGHT http://www.ramrcandramtrack.com/
They have great customer service when I used them when I wired up a C-5 with 21 5MM White high intensity LEDs and 2 blinking red/green LEDs wingtip lights.

How did the white LEDS work out? I am thinking good thoughts about lighting the interior of my 1:48 corvette and need to make a decision soon ... either LEDS, model RR grain of wheat (I hear you Dai about the heat ...) or that fluorescent panel stuff I see advertised in FSM.

The trouble I had with the grain of wheat globes was that I burried them into the plastic with no heat sink. If I had used brass tube or left them in the air then I would not have had any trouble. I have used these small lights on my garden railway suitably shielded with no ill efects. They are a bit of a bugger to replace though if you don't think it out first.

Thanks very much for the hints. Replacement is a non-issue, as when they burn out I'd have no way of getting inside the model. I was considering running them at half voltage, and mounting them in a "fixture" suspended from the deckheads, so after what you have told me I am still considering them, along with the high intensity white Leds.
The ship is nearly fully framed and I'm going to do a trial on the lower mess deck to make a final decision.
