WW 1aircraft suggestions
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, June 6, 2003 8:17 PM
I've been modeling for years and I have never modeled a World War one era bi-plane; I'm looking to start one , and I'm having trouble deciding on what would be a good one to start with.If I can remember correctly, but didn't Revell-Germany issue a Fokker Tri-plane(flown by Von Richtofen) in like a 1:28 scale sometime ago??Again I'm just looking for suggestions, please leave feedback

Yep, Revell Gmbh reissued the old 1/28 Revell kit, and I do mean OLD! That kit dates from the late 60's or early 70's.

Today, the finest kits made in 1/48 are by Eduard and by DML/Dragon. Roden is also making a bid with a couple of excellent and recent releases.

The DML/Dragon kits were released under the following labels: DML - Dragon - Shanghai Dragon

None of DML/Dragon's kits are currently carried by Squadron, they made a Fokker Dr.1, a couple of SPADS, a Fokker D.VII and Fokker D.VIII. They are VERY nice kits, I'm building one of their D.VIII's right now. It's sweet!

I did a search on Sqaudron's site for the Eduard and Roden kits:

http://squadron.com/SearchResults.asp?ScaleList=48&TypeList=1&ManuList=EU&Key=&Submit=Go

http://squadron.com/SearchResults.asp?ScaleList=48&TypeList=1&ManuList=RD&Key=&Submit=Go

I won't comment on 72nd kits, I don't build little scale. But there are a TON of them compared to 48th.

There are also some large scale kits besides Revell's, Hobbycraft did some 28th and/or 32nd kits (bow-wow from what I've heard), and there are several large scale limited run kits being released but I can't recall the manufacturers.

I think that a Fokker Dr1, DVII, or DVIII would be good for WW1 newbies because of the fact that they have so little rigging. That is why in the "old days" I built lots of Aurora 1/48th Dr1's, DVII's, and DVIII's !

And that's why I'm building a D.VIII and have a Dr.1 queued up! Tongue [:P]

The Spad, though... I must get brave before I start on that one...

The rigging has always scared me away. Is there a good guide on how to rig. I can do it I'm just not sure where the wires go. It seems like the instructions leave the whole matter up to the builder.Eight Ball [8]

Yeah, Woody, rigging is quite a daunting task sometimes. (I wanna build a Filipino P-26, but that little bit of bracing wire is scaring me away too)

As far as where you actually connect the rigging, it's all in the research. Pick your subject and then research the bejeezus out of it.

It's up to you to figure out how to actually attach all of this stuff, though. My idea is to drill holes beforehand and then insert sprue, wire, or whatever into these holes with a bit 'o CA. I'd choose to use sprue because I could leave a bit of slack and then tighten it all up with a low-temp heat source, usually a match that has just been blown out.

Has anyone ever checked out the Blue Max site? I might be forced to start building WWI because of these crazy guys! The game looks very fun and the 1/72 planes are awesome.

No prob! We're here to help out any way we can, and then start rambling on into an entirely different direction... Tongue [:P]
