Seeking info for a TBM Avenger project
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, June 9, 2003 11:10 AM
I am researching TBM Avengers that were assigned to US Navy Squadron VT-89 which were either on the carrier Antietam CV-36 at the end of WWII or stationed in Saipan. I am working on a project as a gift for my uncle, who flew a TBM in that torpedo squadron. He is up in years now, and could use a little 'spirit lifter' given his current health.

My aunt provided me with some amazing photos to help me in my research, however they do not incude a picture of the tail section. I can tell the the ID code on his aircraft was 86. As we all know, any unit associated graphics for TBMs appeared on the tail. I know that getting this right on the model will be critical.

Information on this unit is scarce because the Antietam is not considered a true participant in the war. The Japanese surrendered while the carrier was in route from Pearl Harbor to the Yellow Sea. Once they arrived, the carrier's mission changed to a basic police action roll, so the torpedo units assigned to it didn't see any official combat. Therefore, photos and documentation are not readily available.

Could anyone point me in the direction of some good info (and maybe tail photos) for Squadron #89?

The tail code for CV-36 USS Antietam was the letter "V"
Here's the URL for the website: http://www.ussantietam.com/TFlightops.html
There's also a photo of a TBM #93 but, the tail isn't visible.
Good luck and good hunting
Ray
Oops! Sorry bout dat. There are other tailcodes visible in the
photo gallery of the Antietam. Keep on looking!

Found it! Aero series #21 Grumman TBF/TBM Avenger, 2nd edition shows VT-89 TBM-3's over coast of China. Will scan and try to post. There are 3 vertical white lines forward of rudder, with upper third of forwardmost line cut off due to angle of forward edge of vertical stabilizer.

Click photo, then on right side column, select "original size". Sorry, I don't know any other way to post pics to a forum.
Hope it helps!

FANTASTIC!!! Thanks a ton, mostlyjets!

This photo is exactly what I was looking for. In fact, the same TBM (#93) is shown from the port side in another photo I found on the Antietam website.

With your photo, I now have views from both sides for # 93, and more importantly a clear picture of the tail markings! Theses photos in hand, I should be able to complete my Accurate Minatures kit in time for my uncle's birthday.

Again - thanks a bunch!
