Which Plane would you chose?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, June 12, 2003 3:23 AM
Ok its WWII and your given the choice to go into any branch and train to be a pilot... Which branch, war theater, and most important which plane? Mine personaly would have been the marines and flying a F4U-1D(I know like I would have picked anything else Tongue [:P]).

I know this isnt a modeling question and sounds like a Batman Vs. Superman question you would ask at the lunch table in elm school but I like ot know what planes inspire other modelers.

Don't worry Fan, it's not a modeling question, but it's been asked before with much response. So why not one more time?

My choice? The P-40, of course!

Yours truly, Mr.P-40

My choice? European theater and the P-51 Mustang. To fly that wild stallion and be part of the 352nd fighter group would be an honor.

Tough question, but I think I'd go with the USN in a Hellcat.

For me it would be the P-40 Warhawk and P-47 Thunderbolt with the 57th FG, 64th FS in the MTO. Have a friend who flew P-40's and P-47's with that unit.

Today, I'd have to say F6F Hellcat, but only because I have watched "Midway" about 3 time in the past week.

NO CONTEST!

It would have to be that big beautiful bird, the early P-38F (small engine nacelles) in North Africa sporting the olive and gray warpaint with yellow surrounds on the national insignias.

Looked as though it was making 400 just standing there on the tarmac.

Brewster Buffalo, in the South East Asian theatre (SIngapore). Its such a joy watching Buffaloes flying to their death against the mighty Mitsubishi Zeroes.

I'd have to say the P-51D, ETO, 361st FG. Met a guy from "down the road" who was a crew chief there. Built a model of his plane for him. "Ferocious Frankie". Kinda been sentimental for that FG ever since.

Well, I have three I would like to fly; Mosquito, Spitfire and P-51, actually there are quite a bit on my list, but I think these would top it off. As for the Movie "Midway" yea they showed "Hellcats" as "Wildcats", "Vindicators" were shown as Dauntless, Devestators and as themselves. If they could make the movie now with CGI's I think it would be a little better. Don't get me started with the movie "Pearl Harbor".

Wait, I know where this is going. Let's set the scene, shall we?

"The TBF Avengers of Torpedo 8 are shown firing up for their sortie against the Imperial Japanese Fleet. As the pilots taxi out in their venerable SBD's, the ground crew watch silently and sullenly. Then, a cheer rises up as the first Hellcat lifts off the runway, followed by another Corsair.

The scene fades to the formation of SB2C Helldivers as they approach the enemy carriers. Suddenly, out of nowhere, the Japanese P-36's attack with ferocity and tenaciousness. The first Vindicator falls into the sea, soon to be followed by another PBY. The Jap AT-6's continue their vicious attack, and come close in to get point blank shots in at the almost helpless SBC's of VT-8.

It's a miracle that even one of the Wildcats has survived the onslaught, but this is the case. The pilot, after a long and lonely flight back to Midway, banks his Panther into the pattern. What pattern? None of the other Buffalos from the Midway detachment of VT-8 will make it back. He settles his Devastator down onto the runway and taxis in.

The crew runs up to the P-47 as the pilot shuts her down and begin to assess the damage to this lone surviving Skyraider of VT-8's Midway det.

Gotta love old movies that made GREAT use of stock newsreel footage, huh? Tongue [:P]

Thanks, fellas. I'm just naturally screwy, I guess! Used to work in a comedy club, so it must have rubbed off. Went to work one night to find the doors locked. I found VERY little humor in that. Damn, I loved that job... Angry [:(!]Disapprove [V]Angry [:(!]
