I built Monograms F-82 quite a few years ago and wanted a slightly weathered look but not a lot of chipped paint. I used a mix of gloss black with enought flat black to take the shine out of it and painted the tops of the wings and fuselage. I painted the sides and bottoms of the the wings and fusealge gloss black. I then used a wash of dark and light grays to bring out the details. Looked pretty good!

Paint your model "not-so-black." Lighten it up a bit to where you can't tell if it's black or a dark navy grey. Then wash those edges and panel lines with a pure black wash. The black wash should be darker than the overall color of your subject to emphasize the edges, corners and panels.
