northrop flying wings

Yeap, I have them both the xb-35 and xb-49. I build the a couple of years ago. Would love to rebuild them and make a better job of it. Both in building as in painting.
If I can get my hand on them again I will buy and rebuild them.

Sword also made/makes the N-9 in 1/72nd. Also the XP-56 Black Bullet.
They go great with the 35/49s!

I've built about 300 models, so hanging them on a wall seemed a good way to protect and display. These are all several years old, and I got the idea from a display at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC.

LeeTree- Thank you! Hanging them actually keeps dust off the upper surfaces, where I want it least. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be, so now I build bigger scales; finished this one last week.

I'd go nuts about the dust though.
That's a great idea and it looks fantastic - saves on shelf space, too.

Gbarnes, trhat's a lovely sight, mostly that beautiful white thing there on the right! Impressive collection. But where's the B-52???! And are those hanging on a wall???!??!

I had waited for years for an injection B-35 or B-49, so bought and built a B-35 when it first came out from AMT. Not wanting to wait for a B-49 kit, I bought another B-35 and scratch converted it (if it was good enough for the original, etc..) to the B-49. Aluminum tubes for the jets, card stock for the finlets, shortened the ailevators (think that's right?), removed the wing turrents, filled and rescribed the wings, etc. Its now a little dusty, and hanging on the wall with all my 1/72 bombers, but I had my B-49 without waiting. I now have the B-49 kit from AMT, and also an old vacuform kit, but haven't yet built them.

I really like the flying wings. Experimental fighters are my primary interest, but I have the urge to build one of these beauties. I think fear of the unconventional is what did in the flying wings.

Sword makes a 1/48 N-9 MA - one of the flying "scale models" that Northrop made before they made the full size prototype. It's got a vac formed canopy and some resin details. It's not a bad kit, but when I fix the warping and fit problems, it'll look fantastic.

Both XB-35 and YB-49 were available before the AMT kits as vacuforms. I had the XB-35, but never had the courage to build it. Now I have the YB-49 kit from AMT, and I'm still lacking the courage to start it. I wish Academy is going to release them (along with the Valkyrie, of course!) in 1/144. That would complement the B-36 kits very well. The best reference is that book 'Northrop's Flying Wings'.
