If you want, I can copy the page and send it snail mail.

As the single color scheme looks less and less likely i'll try to locate a later instruction sheet or find the splinter reference for 72/73 as you've kindly pointed out the colors, strangely enough i found an old airfix magazine article today for the over painted sea effect of 25/76 (but dont fancy it much), i'm in the UK so Ma's
a way to go for the book but will see if i can get one sent over - have some family there - and it sounds good if i tackle any other Luftwaffe after these problems, seems i forgot my own golden rule - reference first !
i really apprechiate your replies. matt

If you can't do the splinter pattern, later marks used RLM 25 over 76. 25 is black. There was a wavey pattern of 76 over the black. I don't know if the E was still in service at this time and may have been repainted. I also don't know how to tell and E from a J. Maybe you could pass it off as a later mark. The Monogram book is excellent. It has patterns for all the major German a/c, and colors. I don't know the legality of posting the page if I could get it scanned. I'll look further for the 25/76 scheme if you would like.

migs once again I burped on this forum...I agree with wayne If you can find a copy of Monograms Official Painting Guide for German Aircraft...it not o;nly tells you what colors went where, it has color pictures, and black & white diagrams of the splinter/camo patterns. I dont own the book but a buddy does. The company that published it is still located in Sturbridge Ma. I dont know if it is still in print. I find that Model Master paints have nearly all if not all of the RLM colors. Bruce pease

Yes it still helps, i've found a local stockist for Xtracolor RLM paint and am learning about the Luftwaffe codes, you mention a 'two green' upper surface and this seems the more likely than the single green of the origonal 'paint' guide - (unless you mean use one or other ) part of the reason for building was due to this simple scheme - i've got 'Olive' now as Airfix M3 = Humbrol H30 = RLM 83 so i'm there pretty much on the single scheme i hope. Unfortunatly i dont have the splinter pattern for RLM 72/73 camo, i think the later Airfix 217E/J may have, but not this early issue, i am glad of the RLM 66 ref for internals, as i have it way to light at the mo........Shy [8)]Getting there !

Sorry this post is late. Hope it still helps. The E's were done in RLM72/73/65. FS nos. 34052, 34159,26239. Most cockpits were done in black/gray 66. The 72/73 wrapped around the sides of the fuselage. This is according to Monogram painting guide to German a/c. Testors Model Masters has made these colors in the past. Didn't see RLM's or FS's on anyone elses paint charts.

Thanks for those references, the box scheme has the single upper surface color cut diagonally down under the wings and tail, i have found a revell ref for olive green as no.361so will use your no.s to inquire against that one. I'm still sanding, filling and removing chunks to get it to fit together, so it'll be accurate by the time i've done with it ! - just not to a DO 217 ! - dont ya just love old plastic ! - just to let you know i found the color as Humbrol 105 (matt marine green) and have used 65 on the lower surfaces which looks a stack better than leaving the plastic color so ta - yor a star -mabe i'll get an image up laterron

I don't think, the old Airfix kit is that accurate, but good luck anyway, practice never hurts! As for the paint scheme, I don't know what paints you like to use, but all i can find is Humbrol enamel colours. For the underside, Humbrol No 65.
For the top, some 217's were RLM 70/71 while others were RLM 72/73. It seems to be that the demarcation line between top & bottom colours makes the difference, if it's halfway up the fuselage, then use the maritime scheme of 72/73.
The Olive green is near to RLM 80. I don't have a conversion for the other RLM numbers, hopefully someone else does. Though Polly scale paints list the folowing if it will help; RLM 70 - blackgreen, 71 - dunkel (dark) green, 72 & 73 are just listed as green. sorry I can't be of more help.

Could anyone help me with a paint reference for the green upper surfaces - refered to as 'olive green' on the paint guide of the old Airfix kit i've started ? - also what color to use in the cockpit area's ? - grey maybe? the plastic is in light blue so i plan to leave the under surfaces possibly, not done much Luftwaffe so far hence the ??? - any color links or experience for this Aircraft / kit would get me underway a bit more confidently....
