AMT/AmTech?
Posted by BlackWolf3945 on Friday, June 20, 2003 12:43 PM
I'm kinda writing this in response to a comment in another thread, I forget which it was and who made the remark, but they mentioned that the AMT Ju 88 they have looks good enough to be a Tamiya rebox. It is a nice kit, I haven't built one (I usually don't build little scale) but she does look good in the box.

Alas, it's an original AMT mold, which figures; a US company finally starts producing decent aircraft kits after many years and then stops producing them almost altogether. That was right around the time of an acquisition, though, and aircraft models didn't fit into the new owner's plans. But that's neither here nor there...

Anyhoo, for those who liked some of these AMT kits, AmTech, as many of you know, has a number of the AMT aircraft molds and have already put some of them to use, this Ju 88 being one example. (The P-40 & C-135's being the others)

BTW, ever notice a similarity in the names of the two companies? AMT - AmTech - AmT - AMTech... (hehe)

I wasn't a big fan of AMT's P-40's (and I'm Mr.P-40!!!) but I was really happy to see their A-20/P-70 family and the Tigercats, too. They released several nice kits in 72nd as well, and where are all of them now?

Hopefully AmTech has more than just the P-40, Ju 88 & C-135 molds. And hopefully, if they do have them, they plan to do more with some of them. I love new kits just as much as the next fella, but I'd like to see that P-70 out there again, and the F7F-2 and the A-20G, perhaps with a few improvements. (Those A-20 main gear wheels have GOT to go...)

Anyone from AmTech listening in?

I thought AM-Tech was supposed to be doing all new P-61 Black Widow kits. Those would be nice to see.

Yep, the Black Widows are due sometime "soon". (Read "next year". The words "soon", "next" & "year" are four-letter words in the world of new kit releases! Tongue [:P]) You can pre-order them at Squadron, I forget what their p-o price is, but they'll retail for about $60. There was also supposed to be an XP-47H or J, but haven't heard much about this one recently.

AmTech also have announced new kits of the P-40/B/C and the X/YP-37 for next year, oh, and an XP-40Q. All of these are to be in 48th. They also made mention of six new 1/32 kits, and though they didn't mention any subjects, I suspect there may be a P-40 in there somewhere. Just a hunch...

If AmTech got the 1/72 XB-70 molds and really went to town in throwing extra bells and whistles into a new kit based around it, that'd be awesome.

I know that AMTech has released several versions of the Ju-88's, and the newest releases from them look very promising. I saw a German biplane bomber kit from them the other day that looks incredible, complete with Black Box cockpit included with the kit. It's about time an American company started to turn things around.

That biplane is the old ESCI Hs 123, not a horrible kit for it's age. The resin is really nice and with a bit of work you could make something really nice out of it.

I may get one of those after all...

Thanks, Steve, for the nomenclature of the kit. Never new it was an old Esci, though. I actually thought about it, considering all of the extras it includes. You really can't beat the price tag, either.

I've been thinking about buying the two Ju-88 variants as they can be bought at Hobby Lobby for about $11.00. They looked interesting but I hadn't heard anything about the quality of their kits.

I'd say go for it, Woody. They appear to be very nice.

And though I don't build little scale, I've bought and sold a few collections that contained alotta 72nd stuff. I've had the Ju 88's on a number of occasions and thought they looked great. Almost good enuff to prompt me to include little scale in my collection...
