Decals on the P-40
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, August 27, 2005 2:24 AM
Here are the latest pics of Hasegawa's 1/48 P-40E, built using Eduard's PE detail set.

I added the decals to the P-40 today. They're made by Eduard, and settled into the panel lines beautifully. The white fuselage and tail bands, as well as the nose's tiger head, were nice and opaque. The decals may have been designed for another kit, since the radiator contours produced a slight misalignment. This will be easy enough to fix with paint once they're completely dry.The tail number was translucent, though. I may go over it with a brush and paint later. Some of the smallest stencils required more care. They are thin, and can fold over on themselves easily. This happened a couple of times, but adding water and gently prodding them with a brush straightened them.

Once I seal the decals with more Future, I can start the washes.

Here are the previous progress pics: http://www.pix.prettyneatinc.com/p40build.htm

Thanks for letting me share it with you !

looks good, nice work on those big decals... just wondering, is the stock cockpit any good, or is it the usual 'flat panel with a decal' from hasegawa?

Thanks for the update on this build - keeping a watchful eye out for the Mossie though. How's that going?. Eduard decals are real nice - nearly to the point of decaling the Camel myself and the sheet just makes me want to get started!
Thanks for taking the time to share.

Looks great, Bill! I was unaware that Eduard made those specific decals. I'm trying to decide which manufacturer's to use when I build this plane, and it looks like Eduard's are quite nice.

Looks great Pix. I used the Cutting Edge decals on mine & they really were a hassle. Looks like the Eduard worked well.

Pix the P-40 looks great. I cannot wait until you post the final pics. I have two questions for you Pix. 1) How many coats of future do you put on. I just sprayed my Monogram A-10 and the future really darkened the base color (ghost gray) Banged Head [banghead] 2) What do you weather with oils or acrylics ?

Thanks Pix

Thanks Matt, Simon, Mark, Rick, and Sparky !

Matt - I don't know which Hasegawa kits you've built, but I've done almost all of their 1/48 WWII aircraft, and none have blank panels. Hasegawa produces some of the nicest 1/48 injection molded panels, and their dials have "needles & ticks." The panel in this kit is no exception, and is very well done for plastic.

Simon - I have one wheel well on the Mossie scratchbuilt, and I need to finish the other before I can resume work. I like to paint the similar colors at the same time, and I have to paint the metallics before I can close the fuselage (trapping the tailwheel). I can then assemble the airframe and begin painting. The gear legs are finished, and feature PE mudguards.

Mark and Rick - the Eduard decals were a pleasant surprise. I've heard that the tiger head on Superscale's sheet is translucent. There are markings for six aircraft, including Western Desert Air Force, Stateside, RAAF, and Russian birds. There are stencils for only one aircraft, and Hasegawa includes stencils for the prop only. You can see the sheet on Eduard's website.

Sparky - I spray multiple light coats of Future, and finish with a slightly wetter (but not enough to run) coat. I spray until it's reflective and smooth enough. This varies by each build (and sometimes different areas on the same model), so I couldn't give a number. I don't keep track of how many coats, I just go by the way it looks.
All of my washes are enamel. I mix each color with a little black, and apply it to the specific area. For example, the red fuel filler cap below the cockpit will receive a darkened red wash. This way, all the panel lines are the same relative darkness, rather than the alsolute darkness of a single color. It's more work, but I feel it looks more realistic.

Thanks again !

Beautiful work on the P-40. Visibility out of the cockpit appears somewhat limited at the moment. Tell the crew chief to get out his rag and wipe the windshield.

Very impressive. You have a right to be proud on such a beautiful build.

Your P-40 looks really good!! Eduards decals are lovely to work with.
SPARKYVARK: Gloss smoothes out the surface irreglarities of flat paint making light reflect differently. This causes the apparent darkening of the paint. Once you add a clear flat the color should return to a true ghost grey.
