Another P-40 finished (Aleutian Tiger)
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, September 3, 2005 4:38 PM
I finished Hasegawa's 1/48 P-40E, using Eduard's photoetched detail set and Eduard decals. The markings are for an Aleutian Tiger, stationed on the island of Kiska in 1943.

The decals needed touchup with paint in places, including overpainting the translucent tail numbers. They conformed to the surface detail very well.

The gear doors, trim tab actuators, radiator flaps, and gunsights are PE. The kit exhausts were bored out with a #11 blade. After the photos were taken, I realized that I forgot to install the light lens on the right landing gear fairing.

This is a great kit, and I highly recommend it along with Eduard's PE set. Thanks for letting me share the build with you !

Nice job!!! Always liked the markings you used. Haven't picked up one of the Hasegawa kits yet, did you detail the wheel wells or does it come with the plumping already molded in?

Again, really nice job!

Beautiful work, Bill, simply beautiful! I've been following this build of yours closely and know the extra attention and detail you put into it, and it really shows.

Excellent build Pix. I have my version finished as well, but haven't taken any pix yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Thank you very much dragonfly, Sparky, hobby, Gilmund, Mark, trowlfazz, wing_nut, Rick, and ygmodeler !

hobby - the only plumbing I added that you can see in these pics is the yellow hoses. There are more pics in my build article: http://www.pix.prettyneatinc.com/p40build.htm There are twop more lines, and a PE box which you can't see from the angles of these pics.

wing_nut - I put some assembly suggestions in my build article that might aid the build. Check them out, if you want.

A really good 1/48 P-40E kit has been a long time coming, and I think this one was worth the wait. I need to get more of these ! I also need to build Hasegawa's Rufe to keep this bird company.

Thanks again !

OK, Pix, come clean...you have developed a machine to shrink real aircraft to scale, haven't you? Big Smile [:D] Just kidding....that is one outstanding Warhawk, and you are truly DA MAN!

Great looking as usual Pix Wink [;)]

This is one of my favorite schemes for the Hawk-- the Tiger really sets off from the OD/NG... good to see another completed build from you...

Outstanding!!! I've also got one in the works (when and if I ever get the time).

One thing though...they were never stationed on the island of Kiska although a flight of four actually landed on the deserted Japanese airstrip there, shortly before the US/Canadian forces landed. The Lt got his butt chewed out for that and went on to get two more kills while flying P-47s in the ETO. He then became an ace flying F-86s in Korea.
The 11th FS was stationed at Umnak, Adak, Cold Bay, Amchitka and Shemya at one time or another during the Aleution Campaign.

Another stellar build, Pix! The only thing wrong with it, is it isn't mine!

So long folks!

Thanks Brian, ua0124, salbando, Bgrigg, Dave, and Karl !

Brian - I've also found a supplier of model paint in HUGE bottles

Mike - OD/NG can be very boring, so I wanted a little color on it. I need to build one of the P-40s with the skull also !

salbando - Eduard gives almost no info on the decal sheet except for location and year. That's where I got it, so it's their error. No biggie.

Thanks again !

Thanks Sean, thehannaman, Awood, and Darren !

I really can't take credit. Hasegawa did a great job on the kit, and Eduard's PE is top notch. It was a joy to build & detail, and a pleasure to share it with you.

Thanks again !

Once again, excellent bird Bill.

Yeah, the Aleution Campaign is something near and dear to me especially since I'm based in Alaska as a SAR dude. I often get to go out on the chain and see the places these pilots and ground crews had to operate out of. After you experience the weather and think about the lack of Navaids and support, you really get a strong appreciation of what those folks had to deal with. Weather brought down more aircraft than did hostile fire in the Aleutions.

If our Ops Tempo ever slows down my plan is to build (in 1/48) all of the aircraft used during this campaign to include a few dioramas. I can only hopw to do as good a job as you did. Thumbs Up [tup]

Modelling as an art form and yes you can take the credit. Hasegawa and Eduard may have produced some excellent material but they were just a number of parts before you caressed them (is that too strong!!Mischief [:-,]) into shape. Just one request.............can you please now get back to the Mossie!!

Thank you salbando, Joe, blackcat, and Simon !

salbando - I've seen the video of P-39s and B-24s landing on waterlogged airstrips in Alaska. I can only imagine the hardships they had to endure.

blackcat - the reason you don't see seams is because I found them first. Just a little basic skills.

Simon - I'll have pics of the Airfix Mosquito in a couple days (or sooner). One wheel well is scratchbuilt, the other is nearing completion.

Thanks again !

Pix, utterly amazing, simply astonishing.

Really, I hope that someday my skills are honed such that my builds may compare to yours. I know your view on this, but every build of yours would take 1st place in any contest, if you entered.

Congratulations on another superb build.

(I want to see one of your F4U's, or do a Hasegawa Corsair!)
