Painting Bare Metal Foil???
Posted by SNOOPY on Friday, July 11, 2003 6:59 AM
Does anyone know if you can paint over bare metal foil? I keep reading the article about the P-38 in FSM (last year issue I believe) but it never says how the non-glare area was done. From photos it looks like the whole plane was covered in Bare Metal foil then painted with olive drab for the non-glare but I am nt certain.

I picked up a 1/72 scale Mig 15 by MPC (really old kit) from APC Hobbies before they shut down operations and the box pictured it as aluminum skin with a flat black non-glare area in front of the cockpit.

If you can paint over Bare Metal, is there anything special you have to do to it in order for paint to adhere to it?

Here is an article that may help you out with foiling your Mig 15. This article is a little more technical than the FSM article, but does include an in-depth section on painting and weathering.

I'm experimenting with foil myself and have found this particular article very helpful. Painting over foil can be done, but care, pampering and the application of a clearcoat are required.

After you cover your bird in foil, clear coat it. Now paint any other colors you have to. Try Post- Its for masking as they are low tack and won't pull up your foil.
