F-18 Hornet
Posted by styrene on Friday, July 11, 2003 11:54 AM
Please don't shoot!! I'm primarily an armor modeler, but want to put together a 1/48 F-18 Hornet for fun and just to do something a little different. Looking for kit recommendations.

1. Which one is the best detailed, easiest in terms of assembly and fit, and has the least overall problems? I won't be folding the wings, dropping the flaps (I don't think), etc. Will probably be pretty much OOB.

2. I know that kit prices can vary considerably between local shops and mail order, but what should I expect to pay (ballpark)for whichever one you folks recommend?

Thanks in advance for the help. Hornets don't have tracks, do they; or zimmerit around the cockpit?Tongue [:P]

Hey styrene,
WOW..... a target I mean an armor builder doin a plane?? What is this world coming to??Tongue [:P]Tongue [:P]Big Smile [:D]
The best overall 18 is the Hasegawa kit. It runs anywhere from $30-60(depending where you look). The fit is good.
The Monogram Hornet is ok but I had built one some time back and remember fit problems. This bird will run give or take $10-15.
If you really dont care and you want to build for fun go w/ the Monogram kit but if you want a nice detailed 18 go w/ the Hasegawa kit.
Its all up to you my friend.

I was able to see a 48th Hasegawa kit and my friends swear its the best in that scale. Engraved panel lines and nice detail. The price is a little steep, though.

Nope, they dont have zimmerit, or tracks, but I hear they do move mud.Big Smile [:D]

Gip, go with the Hasagawa. It's worth the extra $ for their detail and they had a few special edition kits with metal gear and a few other detail extras. Those are the $60 range versions but they sure do look good. The basic kit is $30-40 like Butz said.

Personally I like a challenge, so I'd build the OLD Testors prototype kit. riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.... Tongue [:P]

Hasegawa is the way to go, the Monogram kit can be built up into something nice, but if you're an armor builder the time involved and the headaches that'll arise aren't worth it.

There's three 48th Hasegawa kits currently on evilBay that are under $15 at the moment.

Butz I'll never forgive you for stealing my joke, but then you steal just about everything from me... Wink [;)]

I have built a 1/72 FA-18C and 1/48 Mirage 2000C from Italieri the fit is good, parts showing the external of the AC is clear of injection molds, has several versions of decals. They have FA-18E Super Hornet in 1/72 anf 1/48. Although you might have a problem attaching the hard points and weapons load which ussually consists of a AGM-88, AIM-9, AMRAAM, drop tanks and targeting/electronic pods. If you wish to use ITALIERI there is a neat way of attaching these by using brass wire/paper clip, precision drill and bits and super glue. You could also try the Academy/MRC 1/32 Hornet to built in september issue of FSM.
