                        A few years ago I read an article on theuse of Spitfires by the USN. According to the article they were designated FS. I don't remember much about the article and was hoping someone out there may have more info.

                        I know very little other than that a US Navy unit flew Spitfires as surface vessel artillery spotters during the D-Day Invasion.
                        As to why, I don't have a clue.........but I'll bet Blackwolf knows.Wink [;)]

                        Ventura Publishing has a two part series on American Spitfires. Don't have them in front of me right now, but I believe it is Part One that has info on the Spitfires the USN used as artillery spotters. I think they were all Mk. V's.

                        Hi jetmech
                        The unit was VCS-7. I have the information on them. They flew rebuilt Mk Vb's during the D-day landings, spotting US Navy gunfire. They wore RAF roundels.
