This topic definetly has the feel of two scorpions in a jar beeing stired up.

I must admit that through my 23 years of modeling I have shyed away from 1/72 scale. I can count on one hand how many I've built. The main reason for myself is INTIMIDATION. I can be a bit of a bull in a china shop if you know what I mean. The thought of trying to work with all those small parts makes my head hurt. People that can superdetail a 1/72 model and make it look good have always impressed me.

Maybe it's time to try another one, its been a while.

Besides, a model display (to me) should be in one scale. A mixed scale public display really irks me no end. Put 'em all in one scale, please, and if you're want to show the big and the small, 1/72 scale is the only way to go.

I didn't even need to post! You just said it better than I ever could!
BTW, I was at the USAF Museum this past weekend and now in each building they have a clear plexiglass architectural type model of that building, with the aircraft of that building placed inside it. All are 1/72 except the WW1/between-the-wars building which is in a larger scale, perhaps 1/48.

For me I can barely build the 1/48 scale planes because of my big hands and I admire anyone who can put those little planes together. Like armor, 1/72 scale boils down to scale preference, selectibility, affordability, storage and desire to do something different. Amen.

I'd be happy to build exclusively 1/48 if I only had the space. . . .

I got into 1/72 scale because....
  • When I was 11 and suddenly became fascinated by World War II, the handful of model kits at White's Dime Store were all in that scale, and

  • At $1.09 a piece, I could afford to get a P-39, a P-51, AND a Zero.

  • Later on, getting back to modeling as an adult, I could easily transport a small padded box containing my current project back and forth to work in my briefcase and work on it at lunchtime.

  • Now, if I build anything in a different scale, its size would be out of proportion with the rest of my collection.

The story might be entirely different if White's Dime Store had stocked 1/48 kits.....and my allowance had been larger. Wink [;)]

I build experimental fighters. If I had to buy 1/48 I'd out of business! If you can't find it in 1/72, you can't find it period.
