Thanks, Swanny--after much frustration with useless Cutting Edge canopy masks, I used your wonderful canopy masking technique, and learned the wonders of Future!

That flat finish really makes the model, looking excellent now.

Thanks, everyone--been working on that plane for so long, I'm getting a bit weary of it. Its all coming back to me now...how much I loved doing this when I was a kid. I wish I still had all the stuff I built back then.

Yes, it does look a bit better than it did--I tried the mixture of Future with Tamiya Flat Acrylic Base, and it still had a gloss to it--not sure if I used the right proportions. Only the Floquil Acrylic Flat did the trick.

Looks great! Very nice job on the finish. Just curious, what problems did you have with the masks? I've used Cutting Edge/Black Magic masks many times with no problems whatsoever.

I just had problems getting the Cutting Edge masks to stick very well, and there was some seepage under the masks...it was probably my fault. I had better luck with Tamiya tape.

Sweet!!!

There's just something about those long nose 190's.
I like the chips taken out of the prop as well.

Chipping on the canopy and wing root is very realistic, what technique did you use ? Looks great thanks for sharing.

The base is resin, from www.justplanemodels.com....planning on painting it soon, maybe gluing a little static grass here and there...

I used a Sharpie metallic gray oil paint fine point pen on the canopy (followed the chipping pattern on the photos and drawings), and Tamiya silver enamel marker on the wing root (wish I'd used the finer pen, though).

The kit is the 1/48 scale Tamiya Fw 190D--not the JV44 version, but the "regular" version with tons of aftermarket stuff...

The real plane had some fire damage to the windscreen and the starboard fuselage, forward from the cockpit, from a cockpit fire (possibly deliberate), and splinter damage to a propeller blade.

Here is my original link, with some photos of the underside, wheel, and engine bays...
