1/48 Hasegawa Nakajima Ki 43 II finished
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, November 13, 2005 5:26 AM
This is my latest finished project, Hasegawa's 1/48 Ki 43 Oscar. Eduard's excellent PE detail set was used on this kit. I did the washes, and added the little details to finish the bird today.

The finish is Alcad II, and I used the kit decals for one of the trainer regiments. The pilots in these units, while still training, flew combat missions.

Because of the contrast between the metallic finish, dark cockpit, and anti-glare panel, I was unable to get a useable shot of the cockpit. You can see pics of the 'pit and engine here: http://www.pix.prettyneatinc.com/oscarbuild.htm

Great work as always Bill. What did you use for the prop and leading edge color?

For that is what I'd truly love to build
And if I had an Oscar KI 43...
I wouldn't be able to make it look like Pix's!

Okay, so it don't rhyme, sue me! Great build Bill!

Thank you Gumiflex, Jerry, Rick, Bgrigg, and smokinguns !

Gumiflex - I'll add a link here to my article that's posted at ARC. The pics aren't very large, so let me know if you want bigger ones. They're on one of my hard drives, and I could email them. I used Jaguar's resin and PE set on mine. Here's the article: http://s96920072.onlinehome.us/Gal4/3101-3200/Gal3175_Typhoon_Lachance/gal3175.htm

Jerry - I used the out-of-production AeroMaster Warbird acrylics Primer Red-Brown on the prop and antenna. The yellow leading edge ID bands are kit decals, as are the white "bandages" under the Hinomaru (meatballs).

I used MicroSet when I applied them, and MicroSol to help them conform. I also slit them along the panel lines with a sharp #11 blade. It took about four or five applications of MicroSol. I also dip Hasegawa decals in very hot (but not boiling) water, since this seems to help them.

Thanks again !

Thanks ModelNerd and flippersdad !

I've tried both of Alcad's primers, the gray & the gloss black. I've been using Future on quite a few builds, and prefer it to anything else. If you haven't tried it, do so. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Thanks again !

Pix,

This is museum quality work!  This a/c looks so real, my wife saw the screen and thought it was a restored WWII plane!  My hat is off to you!  Bow [bow]Bow [bow]Bow [bow]

"Oscar, Oscar, Oscar...!"

Felix Unger would be proud to share his name with that build.   Very nice, very nice indeed.

Thanks Darren, Brian, and wing_nut !

Darren - I used the kit decals for the white "bandages" and leading edge ID bands. They worked pretty well after slicing and applications of MicroSol. Makes for a pretty "splashy" scheme !

Brian - that's the Alcad, Eduard PE, and Hasegawa's kit. The trailing edges of the tailplanes are translucent, they're so thin.

wing_nut - I thought of making a reference to the Academy Awards or Oscar Madison, but neither lent itself to a humorous title. I just went for the factual.

Thanks again !

Pix, great job, I like the nmf.  I also noticed that you put the flaps in the retracted position, I'm going to be starting the Ki-43I by hasegawa and the flaps are not meant to be in the closed position.  Did you have to alter them much to get them closed?  Thanks for the inspiration, I know I won't get mine as close as I want to yours but it keeps me going!Thumbs Up [tup]Big Smile [:D]

Another excellent build, I especially like how the landing gear turned out. In regards to the decals, did you coat it with anything afterwards (besides the Microsol) I mean. I'm always at a quandry on how to make my decals blend with a NMF, yet spraying a coat over the NMF to make everything blend seems to defeat the purpose of using something like Alclad.

Thanks Pisis, jboutin, and waikong !

Pisis - the kit itself is VERY nice. Highly recommended !

jboutin - the flaps were probably the most challenging part of this build. I cut away the interior detail molded on the bottom wing, and filed the thickness of the flaps to get them to fit flush. Since the flaps have a flat surface with panel lines and rivet "holes"on the exterior, you may avoid the work I did by cutting replacement flaps from thin sheet styrene. I spent a few hours on the flaps the way I did them.

waikong - Future doesn't kill the metallic look of Alcad. I Futured the airframe before adding the decals, and I also sealed them with Future. You can spray semi-gloss and flat over Alcad without worry. I don't feel that the Future defeated anything about the metallic finish on this build.

Thanks again !

Thanks for the info Pix, you are absolutely right about future looking fine in your build. I wasn't talking from experience, rather more like inexperience. I haven't put anything over my NMF in fear of ruining the look. I'm gonna give future a try on my next NMF project.

Beautiful work on the Oscar.  You are truly master in the use of Alclad paint.  The wash in the panel is perfect, just enough to highlight them without being overly high contrast.

Thanks duckman, waikong, and yardbird !

waikong - Future will affect other metallic paints, but not Alcad. I haven't tried it on their polished aluminum or chrome, though. They suggest that decal solutions not be used on those shades, so Future would probably change the look.

yardbird - I use enamel washes over Future. The metallic areas received a mix of RLM 66 & flat black, and I mixed a light gray for the white "bandages" under the Hinomaru. Yellow and red were each mixed with black to get a shade that matched the shadows under a light. When you look at pics of actual aircraft, panel lines are not the first thing you see. Washes that are done with a dark or unrelated color, and panel lines that are preshaded, are the first things I notioce when I look at a pic of an aircraft that's been done that way. I prefer a whisper to a shout.

Thanks again !
