So, what do you do with the old models?

I mean, everyone has some kind of space limitation. It's kind of hard to just stick them in the trash bin after putting all that time and effort into them. While some parts can be salvaged, models do not necessarily lend themselves to recycling.

What you you do with the older models that have had their time on the shelf? Anybody have a creative solution?

I will usually use them for kitbashing, or if they're really bad, I just let the kats play with them as scratching posts. I've also given several away as gifts to some kids. Let them get some joy out of it.

Just give them too little kids. Not only will you get rid of them and save space, the kids will appreciate you for it. It looks way better than any toys they have.

I mentioned above that I gave some of my old planes to kids. I just saw my 1/48 SR-71 g oflying through the air (completely unpowered, of course), from a 2nd story window next door. It was doing good, until that tree jumped in the way.

Stored away in the loft, but I do get them out time to time for a spell in my display cabinet, just to remind me of 'the good ole times'... I do occasionaly re-vamp an old kit or another, with new paint scheme/decals, or for a major conversion...

I tend to strip mine and re-cycle them once they have had their time on the shelf or sometimes I'll give a kit to friends who want them. I tend to find that the kits that have been built years before are not as good as my lastest effort so if I'm too embarressed to display something I'll take some photo's as a record and then put them in my recycle box.
What will I do when my display shelves are full of kits to be proud of? That's a long way away yet!

I've considered bringing some down to my local VA. But, I don't know if they do assisted living there, or if it's just a regular old VA hospital.

The VA hospital is a damned good idea! thos guys would truely appreciate someone bringing in a kit of something they worked on or whatnot?
I'm sure they'd have a few good stories to tell as well!

lol.....when I was a kid.....I used to pack them full of fire-crackers, set them on fire.....and throw them out of the window.....going down in flames and all that....:)

You may want to donate them to your local hobby store, if they are not in too bad of shape. Aviation museums always seem to be in short supply of completed kits as well.

When I was a kid, the broken and abused usually went up in a flame of lighterfluid. Occassionally some got the firecracker treatment, others simply dropped down the stairs. Evil [}:)]

Today they are given to my youngest son.

I have some that suck!! So what ill do is get another kit of the same kind of plane then ill take the ugly plane and shoot it with my paintball gun....but an even better idea is to make a crash diorama with them if they look like the plane should even though watchin the model explode when the paintballs hit it is fun...i would only do that to the kits i threw together and did a sloppy job on..like a b-17 i did...the wings were fallin off and it was covered with dust....lol lets just say when i shot it ...it looked as though it had an ejection seat!! and the wings did "fly" off...lol

Old kits? I do either, or a combination, of the following:

1. The kit is "put to grass." That is, displayed out of the protected display cabinet.
2. If I plan on building another one, I put it in one of my "Davis Monthan" shelves along with unfinished projects. I could strip them of spare parts later on, or, use them as testbeds for experimental techniques.
3. I sell, trade or give it to friends who might be interested.
4. For rare kits or those with sentimental value I disassemble very carefully and start a restoration project.

Some of the old models i gave it to my little brothers in law.. they're 3 and 7...
some old models that i put so many efforts on (even they're sucks), i keep them in models graveyard ( it's a big 29" TV box )
Some models i put it on display at my sister restaurant..and i managed to sell 2 to restaurants customers....
I think i have like 20++ old models....
they're replaced with better finished models or when i'm bored looking at them in the display cases.
I didnt' throw models....

Hi all ! I recently had the idea of making a crashed and very rusty model plane, like it has been sitting in open field for at least 20 years. For such a project I need an old model, preferable unpainted. If any of you has the heart to sacrifice one of his older works please contact me and I shall give the model a well deserved place in the model's afterlife heaven :)) .

When I was really young (yeah, right) a BB gun or bottle rocket did the trick. I am smarter now because you don't get them back. You may find one at a flea market, but not all! I strip them carefully seperate them and restore.
