Question about KI-43 markings
Posted by stikpusher on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 9:26 AM

Hello,

I am building one of the older Hasegawa 1/32 KI-43 kits (appears to be a 70's release from the box) and just to satisfy my curiousity, I would like to know what units the decals are for. Normally I would research this myself with my home references, but since Uncle Sam hasme currently overseas away fropm all that and my internet searches are not finding what I am looking for, I figured I would try here. Specifically, the aircraft is in overall natural metal, with green comouflage splotches sprayed onto the upper surface. The Sentai markings are in yellow, and for lack of a better description, look like a pair of calipers with the open end up towards the top of the vertical stabilizer.Any help at all here would be greatly appreciated. Any other information on the history of this unit would also be appreciated. Question [?]

Many thanks,

Carlos

Well, all these years later I have found the answer... 63rd Sentai, the markings in yellow identify the Squadron, or 3rd Chutai of the Sentai

LOL! More of a triggered memory... I came across a photo, thought the markings looked familiar and it went from there...

Dunno, a decade and a half ago, that was actually a pretty sophisticated research question, too.

So, it might have been less "who's the noob" and more "Can't answer the question."

I'd spot you a beer, then or now.

Well thank you sir. I’ll gladly join you for a beer anytime.

Who knows how chellengening that the question was at the time... there was a LOT of very knowledgeable folks here at the time. Although I will say that expertise on IJA aircraft and units in general is far less common  than IJN, RAF, Luftwaffe or USAAF.
