I know this is a very old thread, but several years ago, I stumbled onto some photos of the day in question. I do not know if anyone wants copies, but they do de-bunk some of the assumptions about 67-362 loadout, paint etc.

I stumbled on this old thread that was brought back. I too will like to see pictures of his F4E. I have two E's in my stash and would like to make his plane. I also read somewhere that his E was sold to Israel and was also used in combat with the Israeli AF.

Too many models to build, not enough time in a lifetime!!

Berny sadly passed away several years ago. He is much missed, a great source of knowledge.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Please do post them. I am pretty sure that the AIM-9Js mentioned above did not start to be carried until after Richie got his fifth kill.

that's very interesting! That means that L. Drendels artwork is a little bit wrong...

Yes I used the RF-4C outer wing and of course no LES. Yes the sparrow well are too long (Revell made them longer for the AMRAAMs for the ICE) .

I have both badges I can send them to you per mail.

TO 1-1-1 (I happen to have a copy from that time period) states the base ID and the last three digets of the serial number will be in white. The AF and year would be in black. It even goes so far to give the sizes of each.

Are you using the wing from the Revell RF-4C kit to back date the E model? If so, you will have to shorten the rear AIM-7 missile wells. They are way too long and the AIM-7 missiles do not fit very well.

Of interest, at that time the normal loadout for our aircraft on a MIG CAP or long range BUFF excort mission, was four AIM-7E's, four AIM-9J's, two 370 Gal drop tanks, one 600 Gal center line tank, one ALQ-87 ECM pod on the left inboard pylon, and one ALQ-101 ECM pod on the right inboard pylon. On MIG sweeps and short range excort only one ECM pod was carried, but the wingman would have the other pod loaded on his aircraft. Also the 600 Gal center line tank would not be carried.

Let me know if you locate the wing and squadron patches in 1/32 scale. I am looking for some to complete my project. I am making the aircraft I was crew chief on during the same time period in Udorn. My aircraft is F-4E 69-260 (Too Sick Oh), a double MIG killer during linebacker.

Lou Derndel had painted the 67-362 with white AF/67. I think this issue came in 1972 for all the USAF planes (??)...

During that time frame (Linebacker) the F-4E was going through many modifications. One of these was the Midas Gun Mod, where the longer gun fairing was installed, replacing the short one. Another mod was the "Strip Lights" or Formation Lights. Some aircraft had one or more of the mods completed and some had none. (My aircraft had the Midas gun mod but not the strip light mod). When we deployed to Udorn for Linebacker the teeth were painted on the nose as shown in many photographs. They were removed from all aircraft after our return to the states. The TAC badge was removed after our arrival, but the Squadron and Wing patch remained. Unit involved was the 33 TFW, (Nomads) 58TFS (Mo-Gilla Go-Rilla). We were assigned to the 432 TRW for support. The fin cap was painted blue with white ED on the tail. The serial number was black AF and black 67. The rest of the ser number was in white. That was the standard for TAC air craft at the time. At one time I did have pictures of the aircraft setting on the ramp at Udorn. That was some of the items stolen along with my awards and decorations and collection of PlayBoy, (I bought them for the articles) when my household goods were shipped from Spain to the States.

If I could have the pics of your dad would be great.

I'm working currently on a F-4E Kit (1:32 Revell) converted to an early E and I don't know where the serial numbers go , if there was a TAC badge on the tail kill markings etc.
Lou Derndel has painted it without the TAC badge, but all other planes of the 33rd had it. In the book AND KILL MIGS there's a pic of J. Madden in front of another 33rd TDY F-4E . That plane has no formation stripes and the TAC badge...

Now what's true??? will see...

I too have burned up the net and am shocked that this is such a tough jet to get photos of.

This shot is from Squadron's "...AND KILL MIGS" and shows Ritchie & DeBellvue by the jet in question after the double MiG-kill flight. It's only useful insofar as showing a few superficial details such as the 58th FS unit insignia on the left intake.

This shot may or may not be of the jet in question, but I found it to be interesting nonetheless. If I had to guess, I'd say it's probably F-4D 66-463.

Regardless of what aircraft it is, it's a nice shot of the leading ace of the Vietnam War and one of his pilots!

My father was at Udorn at that time. The E belonged to the 33rd TFW, they were there TDY. My dad has photos of the kill makings being applied. I'm sure he has others.I'll try to get copies.
