The spinners fell under the dirction of the painting orders and some were indeed painted different colours but were not official. I read once where a squadron was given notice to comply with orders since they had their spinners all painted in their respective "Flight" colours i.e. red flight, blue flight, etc.
I suggest reference photos. I realize that trying to figure out the tone of grey in a B&W photo is very dificult. Debates on colours of spinners and also entire a/c rage on, so I say, welcome to the debate.
Cheers

I think I read somewhere that a red nose signified the squadron leader - can anyone confirm this? Any significance for the other colors such as black, sky and perhaps white? Thanks to any and all that reply.
