Im currently building a Hasegawa SBD-3 for a friend myself (in fact I have been since February; just cant seem to get out of that slump).

According to D&S most of the Dauntlesses involved in the Battle of Miday were SBD-3s, with a few SBD-2s present.

The paint plan of the SBD-3 (both Midway -- VB-6 aboard the Enterprise and VS-8 aboard the Hornet) I have calls for just two basic colors, about the same as you wrote above. Perhaps you might want to check out Aeromaster Acrylics Nos. 1047 (US Blue Gray) and 1047 (US LIght Gull Gray).

Youre right in regard to the painting. Spray on the lighter color first and graduate to the darker hues.

You have to carefully remove the plastic airbrake and install the new units. The SBD-3 I have already has a PE set. Along with it comes a handy PE saw! You can use that to cut off the airbrakes. The interior of the airbrakes is insignia red; the actuator rods are natural metal; and the actuator arms are white.

Hope this helps.

Have a few questions.

I am working on a Midway theme, starting with this plane. Have the accurate Avenger on the way. First off, I am not sure the SBD4s were at Midway. Seem to be a later version.

But, assuming there were not major changes, I need the exact paint scheme. I assume it is the three color, flat white on undersurface, sea blue on top surfaces and light grey on the fuselage. Is that correct? The question is:

Is it dark sea blue or flat sea blue?
Is it ight grey or what exact grey?

Now, it is possible this is not Midway scheme, please tell me. The Hasegawa instructions call for navy blue, what is that. They also call for a 50:50 mix of navy blue and light grey for the fuselage. What exactly should I use? I want to try and make this the first of my Midway scheme, if possible. Your help is always appreciated.

Finally, how does one get that nice transition from the top of the fuselage to the sides? Do you first airbrush the lighter color and then from the top, spray the darker blue?

Lots of questions. I painted the interior last night, want to get assembling soon.

Finally, someone sold me the airbrakes I guess they are called as a separate package. Do I remove the plastic airbrakes and then position these? They appear to be red, is that true?

Thanks again.
