In the Hasegawa model, how exactly does one cut out the dive brakes. The model itself says you can cut them and make them appear open. I assume you cut from top and bottom and re-glue. I, luckily, have a photo-etched set so I assume I remove and glue the set on. Question, can you paint over the brass or what ever it is? What kind of paint and what kind of glue do you use to attach to the plastic main body?

1) With a razor (jewlers) saw.

2) Attach the PE with CA glue (super glue). you can paint the brass but you should put down a coat of primer first. It will giveyou a uniform color/texture and better adhesion for the color coat.

Hi! I'm building the same model. Hasegawa did a pretty crappy job with this one. Accurate Miniatures Dauntless is a lot better for the same money. Oh well, we did the investment a now what, right? You can remove the dive brakes with a razor saw but be careful with the dihedral joints, they are supposed to remain in their place. To avoid the risk of ruin the wings I used a panel scriber to thin the plastic following the panel lines. Once the plastic is translucid (light will come through) I carefully cut the flaps out with a sharp X-acto. Always works!
The plastic brakes were replaced by photoetched ones from Eduard. They are made of brass and are thin and difficult to assemble. Extra care must be used to put them together. They should be glued with CA (i.e. Pacer). Be aware of open the flaps to the desired angle BEFORE you glue the things.
Painting is straightforward, just as if you were using plastic. Have fun!

Once again, you guys are spectacular. I was so nervous about removing the airbrages on this Dauntless. But, lalvarezmex, if that is correct told me how to do it. I purchased a Squadron scribing tool and wallah, last night all removed without a hitch. Now, a little sanding and I think I am ready for the photoetched pieces. This is gonna be gorgeous, I hope. Thanks guy!
