FJ-1 Fury in combat

My sources, Air War Over Korea by Larry Davis states that the first Navy aircraft to see combat was on July 3 from the USS Valley Forge. This included AD Skyraiders, F4U-4 Corsairs with F9F-2 Panthers flying top cover. The Panthers were from VF-51 and VF-52. The book says it was the first use of jet aircraft launched in a combat situation. Two YAK-9 were shot down by the Panthers on that day.

I just went back and read the whole text. I wouldn't place too much faith in the text as it states Britain produced the F-102 and F-106. These aircraft were US designed and made. There are other errors in the text also.

the FJ-1 was a limited production plane. It was put out to pasture pretty quick when the value of the swept wing was learned from studying German jet technology and the FJ-2 was developed.

The FJ-1 never saw combat period whether in Korea or otherwise. She was originally designed for the Navy by North American Aviation not too long after WWII. The original design had straight wings and tail surfaces similar to the P-51. During carrier qualifications the original Fury fared poorly. During that trip on the U.S.S. Princeton almost all the aircraft were rendered unairworthy due to crashes or maintenence. The Air Force had expressed some interest in the design too, but they wanted swept wings and tails. NAA re-designed the airplane and it went on to become the famed F-86 Sabre. Later in the 50's the Navy requested Furies modified with the same wing and tail design and that became the later FJ-2, 3, and 4 series that served thruoghout the 1950's. Well, now that you got your history lesson for today I think I'll shut up...
