best way to put on lozenge decals?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 6, 2003 5:33 PM
I bought a 1/72 roden fokker d7 and it has lots of schemes in lozenge covering the tops and bottoms of wings as well as the foward fuselage. The decals are not cut to the form of the wings, etc. What would be the best way to go about getting the decals on the wings since they aren't square like the decals. I haven't done too much with lozenge other than a fokker d8, but the decals were in the form of the surfaces so it wasnt too bad.
Thanks

Derek, this way madness lies!
I built a couple of these kits for a friend, after much cursing I hit on the following method.
Forget decal softener's, Let the decal soak well, They don't like to slide much & they tear very easily. I found the best thing was spit! See if you can lift the decal slightly & get some under it, apply to the wing surface too. Slowly slide your decal into place. Press down with a soft cotton cloth. Now apply softener if you think you need to.
Do both top surfaces, leave to dry overnight. Then do the undersides, again leave to dry overnight.
They will now be ready to cut. Gently do so, they will be very brittle so take great care. Some bits may come off the wings, so apply softener and try to restick them, failing that, I had some paint in the right colour so I touched them up with that.
It's a long difficult job & I was glad when I finished, never again!

Derek, As usual my brain is lagging behind my typing skills.
Roughly cut the decal to shape & put on the underside ones first, try to wrap them around the leading edges slightly. The uppersurface ones go on after you shape the forward edge's so they will wrap around the leading edges of the wings & leave a neat line underneath. Then we come to cutting the brittle trailing edge bits.
It's a couple of years since I did them, but I still shudder when I remember!

Thanks Peter, I too have a project coming up that may require these decals. I have stayed away from them but the finish is so striking I think I'll give them a shot. Thanks for the tips. Woody
