Sand Paint Color
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 20, 2003 3:42 PM
i am working on an Academy P-40. One of the color choises is sand and dark green, but looking at my refernce book, the sand looks much darker than the Model Master sand color, and the dark green looks more like olive drab. Does anyone know if this is a deffernt paint Scheme? If not, where can i find the paint colors, as the model gave no fedral standard numbers.

There are no exact FS595 color matches for early war Sand and Dark Green. However, the AIR FORCE COLORS, VOL. 1, 1926-1942 by Dana Bell gives the closest matches as follows:

No. 26 Sand...............FS30279, #26 is slightly darker and
pinker.

No. 30 Dark Green....FS34092, #30 is slightly blacker.

I hope this is of some help. Wink [;)]

Don't forget that in the desert the paint would fade quite quickly, anything more than, say, six month's old would be several shades lighter than the factory finish.
Add a couple of sand storms and what does it matter how close you are to the FS number? So really, from my point of view anyway, it all depends on how much weathering you're going to do. The more weathered ( stained & battleworn) the aircraft, the more faded and tatty the basic paint finish will be.
A really good sandstorm will strip the paint right off, it even does it now to the modern paints on cars, so given the paints available then, the choice is yours.
