Swords NEW T-38 Talon SW48004 1/48
Posted by Butz on Saturday, August 23, 2003 3:13 AM
Hey all,

Just had to get one, guess it was calling my nameTongue [:P]. Swords kit consists of 62 parts and 24 of those parts are resin.
Most of the resin parts make up the interior and one piece is part of the undercarriage wheel well, speed brake set up and the other is the burner and burner cans..
I am not sure if Sword themselves did the interior or did they go out on the market and get another mfg to do the resin. Nowheres on the box does it say who did the resin so I'm taking it that Sword did it.
The interior is set up nicely w/ two seperate tubs, ejection seats, sticks, instrument panels, lifting arms for the canopy and the deck that goes between the front and rear offices.
As for the (3) clear parts, I give them a "B" due to the fact that there is a fogged look to them but just a tad bit. When looking through the clear parts, the vision is not really obscured even though the the canopy is a lil thick.
The Talons lines are nice and crisp w/ engraved lines. The lines are not like most limited run kits thick but are finely engraved(make sense).
The main wings and stabulators are seperate from the fuselage but are molded as one piece each(phew no seams to fill).
Landing gear doors lack some detail but other than that they seem to be fine(at least for me that isWink [;)])
There are only a few draw backs mind you. For one the landing gear over all looks like they took plastic and just put a shape to them(ok they do look like the gear w/out the detail).
The tires look to small for the a/c and this is comparing them to the actual bird. Again this is a limited run kit and the way the two halfs go lead me to believe that there will a lil filling to do.... O BOY..!!!
I did check though one of my F-5Fs by Monogram and let me tell ya the landing gear look great(nice detail all around) compared to what you get w/ the Swords and yes the landing gear are the same size as the Monogram. So I may see a swap soon who knows.
The intakes look promising on how there are assembled. Lets hope the have a good fit along side the fuselage.
O yes and for the decals they give ya two options, one is a generic flight traing sqd and the other is a bird out of Holloman AFB. Both of these a/c will be overall semi gloss to gloss white.
The fit will be another story so till then there will be alot of researching on this sweet lil Talon.
The next question is what scheme should I put her in??? Decisions decisionsTongue [:P]Tongue [:P]
The price tag on this baby is $45 and I give it a "B+" over all

Mike,

Just saw the Talon kit at the local shop yesterday and was wondering what its deal was. Thanks for the rundown, I'll be sure to pick it up! I live in Lubbock, which at one time was the T-38 capital of the world. We've got one on a post down at the Science Center, so I'm gonna go take lots of pics!

Hey Steve,
I thought about that but for some reason the schemes that the AF used look a lil more tempting. Like I said I'm gonna keep my options open.
Hey maybe I could interest my dad in a USNTPS T-38??
Also just got a news letter from Twobobs and they are planning to do a few sheets for the Talon. So we will see what they do.

Mike,

If I remember correctly, the price tag on the T-38 here was $39.99. I'll have to double check though. The one over at the science center is in ATC markings from Reese in the early 90's. I'm starting classes this week, but I'll try to get down there and take some pics of it. If not this week, I'll get down there the following week.
