Lancaster Dambuster Raid. Full Dambusting Model~!
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, August 28, 2003 1:08 PM
Alright First let me say that I am new to this forum, and found it while researching for information.

But the reason why I am posting this is to ask for help. I am in a Cadet Squadron and am in charge of a modeling club that we have. Every year we do a War Scene as our grad closing. This year we I wish to do The Lancaster Dambuster Raid, the problem is We have a very very tiny buget of $500 Canadian. We already have A couple Dambusters and normal (which we will convert) but we wish to buy as many models as we can (ranging in scale). The largest we are looking for is a 1:32, the smallest 1:72. Due to our buget we are trying to get the cheapest, but with the most detail, that we posiably can get. So if anyone knows of a suply that sells cheap small scale lancaster models, please tell me. The 1:72 are going to be fairly high up so the do not have to be in great detail. Also if anyone knows where I would be able to get 1:48 German Infentry and anti-aircraft guns for the the damn and area please let me know~ Pics of the acual raid would also help.
Basicly any information that you have on any of the dam raids will help~ Thank You all in advance~ And if you have any questions just ask me~

Hi Cadet537 as you may have noticed if you have read through some of the older posts i am also working on a bambuster lanc too. i am doing AJ-G Guy Gibsons a/c i will probably have some spare codes left when i have finished the lancs that i am working on (five of them), you are welcome to the spare decals, can you e-mail me your postal address? have you tried 617 sqn's web site? i belive that they have dambuster raid info on it. the only 1/32 kit done of the lanc is (as far as i know ) the vac form by ID models and this is pretty basic to say the least. it gives you the basic airframe for you to add the details and make as good a kit as you are capable off but it is an "experienced modeller" only job anything that you need to know just ask. good luck..... Scale on Lancaster kits mmm.... (any in 1:144 ?) - you could start at 1:96 Frog / Eastern Express issue is available $10 ish i imagine), lots in 1:72 Airfix one is nice also Revell and others (?), 1:48 from Tamiya - this is huge so do you need the 1:32 (thats still one hell of a big dam Dam you'd have - even at 1:48 must be 30 feet wide or so !) are you using real water ? Clown [:o)] very ambitious.......
love to see some pics later Tongue [:P] - matt

1/48 is problematic for the German AA Batteries; if you can run to it, move up to 1/35, then you have most of the model manufactuers' ranges to choose from.

Did you try asking local hobby shops for model donations? When I was on the CIL we got several kits donated as prizes or awards for the cadet's annual parade, and the shops were usually pleased to donate for this cause.

You might try some shops that specialize in gaming for figures, some I have seen are 1:43 which is close enogh to 1:48 not to matter.

What squadron are you with?

Bruce

Hey All!

I must admit your project is very ambitious, and would love to see some pictures. My Grandpa was a Lanc Pilot with 9 sqn, and was awarded the DFM. I myself am a Cpl in the RCAC with Unionville's 351 Silverstar sqn and also run my squadron's Modelling club. Anyway, here's some info I gave give you.....

Toronto's Aviation World website offers Revell's 1/72 Lancaster Dambuster for 23.99 Canadian, a decent price for such a big kit. The fit is good, and detail is well done. I would definetely recommend this kit for such a project.

A few months ago, Britain's Aeroplane magazine published a photo rich article on the Dambuster raid, and is an excellent research resource.

By the way, here's an interesting story: There's a huge lawsuit going on in England right know over one of the Bombardier's (who was the only one who breached the dam) Log Book. Apparently a Con-Artist claiming that he needed artifacts for a local war museum was loaned the log book by the Bombardier's widow. Now she wants it back, but he wont give it back. Quite interesting really........

Give me a shout if you need any more help. After all, my name is the Lancaster_Lover!!!

Bandit's!!! 12 O'Clock High!!!

P.S. The film "The Dambusters" is an excellent reference for your project.

Hi again, for pics click 'insert image' from the format toolbar and place a http/ url for the pic between the pair of image brackets.
lancaster lover seemed to imply only one Dam was 'busted' -
both the Mohne by AJ - J and Eder by AJ - N were breached. 11 of the 19 Lancasters that took part returned.

BUT Please note; when the film was made, the actual design of the Upkeep Mine was still secret, so the mine shown in the film bears little resemblance to the real weapon which was basically just a cylinder.
There's one on display at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford in Cambridgeshire

There is a "sticky" topic in the "general discussion" area about this.
Remember that 1/48 is also O scale for rail roads so don't overlook the RR stuff.

Alright, We (Other modelers and I ) have decided to go with 1:72 scale for everything. (do to funding) the thing is we cannot decide to to the eder or the mohne (both were destroyed by the dambusters) the problem is the mohne will be 29 feet long if done to scale but it has anti aircraft. the eder on the other hand will only be 18 feet long but with out any aa guns. We'd like to have some anti aircaft fire to add the look and that, but the size is really quite large. the largest room we have to make this it in 35 feet long (dont worry this is being done in sections to take apart to get out the door). What do you guys think? Mohne or Eder?

the Eder sounds more attainable, -N, -L & -Z took this one on, furthest East of the 3 main targets, i think it held the largest body of water also, N got the Dam, Z got shot down by flak & L made it home. (not sure if N got back )
10 inches (254mm) will give you a 1:72 60ft height approach, as this was at night so you could try height lights also,
they met at an Eight Ball [8] shape on the water at 60ft as yu know.
There would have been considerable defence around the Dam even without AA towers and also search lights & torpedo nets in the water - giving some details to add -
you could spin the bomb up using a motor ? backward spin i think .....thats my total reference of the raid but others here will help lots.............good luck boys

On Topic (Just),

For those in the UK (Or visiting) check out the Pet Wood Hotel in Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire.

This was the original 617 Sqn Officers mess and they have a small museum in the hotel (Not to mention the remains of a test Upkeep mine in the car park).

Woodhall village also has a large memorial to all who lost their lives in the Dams Raid.

I was lucky enough to stay there whilst on a work trip to RAF Coningsby recently.

Well worth a visit,

Rob M.
