Louisiana ANG Phantoms
Posted by aagranata on Tuesday, October 17, 2006 9:26 PM

I noticed on ebay that Microscale sheet 48-249 has Louisiana ANG decals for the F-4 Phantom.  Does anyone know if these markings are for the rather odd bluish-gray camo scheme that some of these Phantoms wore??  It's difficult to tell from the seller's photo and I don't want to ask the seller to open the decals....

If not, are there decals out there available for these aircraft??

Just got a confirmation that the decals are, in fact, for a two-tone gray F-4.  Snatched 'em up right away.  I really enjoy building Phantoms since there are so many different paint schemes.  Here's what I have so far (I only currently build USAF Phantoms).  Am I missing any??

Gull Gray over white

ADC Gray

Geman Splinter Camo (35th TFW...Go George AFB!)

SEA

Euro I

Hill Gray

....and now the LA ANG two-tone gray

Of course, there's the Thunderbirds, but I'm not sure I want to deal with those decals....

A few that come to mind are:

SEA with gray bottom
SEA with wrap around camo

Edwards test birds, mostly white with red or day glo orange high vis panels

QF-4s with various high vis panels, frequently SEA camo top, but gloss finish instead of flat. Tyndall has at least two of these they send to airshows that are pristine & immaculate.

Airframe #12-200 was the prototype for the C, D, E, RF and fly by wire Phantoms. One interation of this bird had canards on the air intake trunks.  Beautiful white paint job with blue stripes down the side and dark blue belly, leading edges and stab tips.  It is at the USAF museum in Dayton now.  Micro Scale has a sheet with these marks in 1/72.  Photo below

Here is the Tyndall AFB F-4 Heritage Flight.  I see them often at the base flying.

I have those decals and one picture of a Louisana ANG F-4 that I posted.  Don't know the time period, probably the late 80's.  That is "Coonass Militia" on the tail later changed to the politically correct "Bayou Militia".   I also attached the "history" of the Unit Patches.  The one in French was the interim patch, meaning  "Death by Coonass, Eagle Pilot".  Ooops!  Probably borderline censorship here!  Sorry!

Almost forgot about the Edwards test aircraft!  I know that Cutting Edge has a sheet for a 1/72 Edwards test bird, but is there a sheet for 1/48 scale???

As for the Coonass Militia Phantoms, I believe there were three or four different variations of the two-tone gray camo.  A great reference is Don Logan's book on ANG and AFRES Phantoms.  After looking through that book, I also noticed that there was an AFRES Phantom unit in Texas that had a strange variation of the gunship gray/neutral gray camo scheme.

A good reference for the two tone gray scheme is the January 1992 FSM. It has an Intl Colour & Camo article on the "Project Hill Phantoms" . It shows the Bergstrom variation of the cheme. I have also seen this color scheme refered to as "Egypt 1", but I haven't done a lot of research on it. I mostly build Navy/ Marine Corps phantoms.
