1/48 scale figures
Posted by r13b20 on Thursday, September 4, 2003 6:31 PM
In my travels I have not seen 1/48 pilots for aircraft. Am I missing something here? I need at least two for two academy kits I just bought. I bought the Corsair (f4u-4b) and the Tomahawk (p-40c). They seem like good kits, but no pilots! I'd also like to get extra figures for the B-17 I'm gonna build. ( bombadere, gunners, etc.) Any help is greatly appreciated! Bob

well I know Hasegawa has a line of modern pilot & gnd crew figures, and I think they came out wih a WWII set too, but the best place to go would be greatmodels.com or squadron .com for more info & prices

Why not give O gauge model railway figures a try? Some converting may be required but who knows you may enjoy it.

You might want to check Verlinden Prouctions - several years ago I purchased to different sets of 1/48th scale figures from them. One was a set of three WWII fighter pilots Kit #483, and one was a set of WWII grownd crew figures kit #482. Both sets are resin and seem to be very well detailed. Also, I was able to buy from CMK (Czek Master's Kits) a set of two resin US WWII fighter pilot figures kit #F-48023. I believe I got that from Squadron - but can't sure now because as I mentioned, it was several years ago. Hopefully these are still available.

Additionally, I've bought Verlinden aircraft deck crew figures in 1/48th - they look great with my F6F Hellcat diorama. I think I've seen 1/48th WWII Navy pilot figures offerd by Verlinden - but can't be absolutely certain - I've been out of modeling for a couple of years now and am just getting back into it.

Good luck - hope this helps, and I hope you find what you are looking for.

By the way Dai, O gauge railway figures is an excellent suggestion - one I had not considered before you mentioned it - thanks!

This is a great topic as I have spend the last couple of weeks looking at a variety of sources and manufacturers for pilot figures. Skip the Hasegawa WWII pilot figures as they are all standing and with limited poses (detail isn't all that great either). The mastery miniatures and a metal set from Verlinden had the best that I could fine. I love the idea of O scale as a possible source of parts that could be worked into nice figures. It amazes me that with all of the 1/48 scale aircraft and the enormous amount of American/Allied aircraft that pilots actually in the cockpit would be a no brainer. Unfortunately there are plenty of pilots, just not doing an real "work!"

I believe Preiser has some 1/48 scale pilots but they may all be WW II German. Think I remember seeing them at www.squadron.com but not positive
