I've started to gain some interest in building a model of this bird as of late. However, can anyone tell me the story of this thing? What was their intension in this design?

This was classified as the F-82 it's purpose was to provide a pilot and a co-pilot for long range bombing missions. But was to late to be used in WW2. Production did'nt begin until 1946, the first three north Korean planes shot down were by F-82G interceptors on June 27, 1950. It had six .50-cal machine guns, and could carry 25 five-inch rockets and 4,000lbs of bombs.

The design of this A/C was that it for Intercontential bomber escort, but when the jet age was starting to emerge then the plane became aboselesent (for being a reciprcating engine powered) but she still had the longest range of any fighter of its time, and with the second controls for a co-pilot to releive the pilot went they became tired, and then someone got a idea to have the co-pilot become the RO for the "G" version and put a radar pod on the center wing and then you got an extremly long range all weather interseptor fighter, North American Aviation seen that the success of the P-51 Mustang as a long range fighter they wanted it to have better range for the PTO and by adding a second fuselage it also gave it almost 3x the range for it's older brother, I've built the Monograms F-82 & Modelcrafts F-82 both are a nice addition to any collection but the Modelcrafts kit should be built by a more experienced modeler, there is a lot of sanding and trimming to be done on this kit to make it look good, by my recommendation, but it's a very nice kit,
