PBY Detail Search
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, September 6, 2003 12:36 PM
Does anybody know whaer I can find the resin corrected tail section for the Revell/Monogram 1/48 PBY-5A? I'm also looking for the interior detail set that I know at least used to exist? I'd be grateful for any assistance.

For the corrected tail look at Belcher Bits. They have two types. As for the cockpit there is one done by True Details. That set should be still availible at squadron shop. The tail you could order direct from belcher bits. both have links all over the place.

Eduard also makes photo-etch detail set for this PBY. You can get it from any of the major model warehouses.

Any recommendations on the best detail kits. Eduard vs. True Details. Also, is the cockpit detail worth it?

I have both sets, and they are nice complements to each other. There are details that one has that the other doesn't. But Dmodeler, you have a point. once the PBY is closed up, you can't see any of the detail that is added for the nose gunner position, unless you open the bombing window, some of the waist positions. The most that you will see is the cockpit itself, but I am doing it more for the fun of detialing it, even if most won't see my work, but it does bring up a point; Is it worth it to buy these detail sets even if most people won't see them?

reluctant_wanderer:

I too enjoy detailing, if nothing else for my own enjoyment/challenge. That is what is so nice about these add-ons. Thanks for the run-down on what is really visible. This helps in making decision on what to spend my money on! By the way, does anyone have any great model pics of the PBY? I would love to see some posted as I will probably start building mine here in the next couple of months (need to finish a Panther tank first).

I have the PBY-5 and -5A from Monogram. I'm in the middle of the -5 now an I plan to have it made with floats up and in flight using the crew of the -5A. I also have the True Details cockpit set that I was going to use on the -5A with it's wheels and floats down and have some of the cockpit windows cut to be in the open position so a better view can me made of the detail.
