Well, darn! Looks like I'm not going to get much of a consensus here. Tongue [:P]

Thanks for the suggestions. Looks like I'll be looking at Italeria (heard they have a good He 111) Hasegawa, Tamiya, and Airfix. At least 3 of those are big, trusted brands. And Airfix seems to have a specialty in 1/72. From this point, I'll probably look at my hobby shop to see what the box is like - to get some idea of detail and parts. Then do some shopping for price. I'll probaby start with the Spits, since I'll need two of them, and can change brand if I'm not satisfied with the first. The other planes can follow that based on the experience of each previous build.

My plan is a couple dioramas or viginettes. One will have the two Spitfires after a Me 109. The other will involve a Hurricane and He 111.

Hands down the Tamiya 1/72 WWII warbirds are the best. Astounding detail for 1/72. They do Spitfires, ME-109, FW-190, Corsair, Mustang etc... They cost a little more than hasegawa but IMHO blow Hasegawa out of water. Raised cockpit dial and paneling, etc. I bought them all.

Italeri makes a Mk.5 and a Mk.9. i found both easy to build, and if you don't mind accurcy you can make a really cool looking color scheme by using the US markings on the desert version.

Thanks, cuda. So, I suppose that Hasegawa would be good if I find the models I'm looking for? Price isn't too much an issue, within reason. 1:72 are often inexpensive. I've seen kits for as low as $5. I looked at some of Academy's online along with Airfix. They are a contender.

hey CorMak;
well I've built a Heller Spit mk Vb and it was fairly nice, also for the Heinkel Matchbox has made one but I don't know if it's still in production, as with Italeri's, a good rule of thumb is that the Japanese kits are really nice but pricey, the European kits are okay but older and don't have to much interior details as the Japanese kits but are fairly easy to build, the American kits are really old like Revell's 1/72 scale planes they date back into the early 60's, but I've seen Academy's kits and they are really nice and affordable too, if you have a good hobby shop by you then see if they could get you the best deal on the kits you are look for, also check out EvilBay (EBay) you may get some of those kits for penny's to the dollar, I'm guilty of that, I got some great deals on out of production kits for really cheap

Thanks, Keyworth. I'm kind of leaning right now towards Airfix. Maybe, instead, I should ask for recommendations in general for a manufacturer of plane kits. Kits that are clean and detailed, perhaps. Maybe some folks haven't modelled in this particular subject, but have experience from buying other types of plane kits, and can recommend based on those buying experiences.

Hasegawa, Academy, Airfix all have good Hurricane kits out. Spitfires, too. There are others that I can't recall at present. Italeri had a Heinkel at one time. Check your local hobby shop, web vendor or eBay. You won't run short of resources. Good hunting!

Recommendations of kits for 1/72 Spitfire, etc..
Posted by CorMak on Monday, September 8, 2003 8:57 PM

I have a couple projects in mind and am looking for recommendations of kits (manufacturers) to look for. Ideally, I would like them to either be common in model shops, or not too difficult to find and order. I'm looking for kits that are not too difficult (I still consider myself a beginner [airbrush what?!]) but have plenty of potential for detailing - will stand up to cuting away parts for simulate damage and such.

Anyhow, I'm looking for all to be in 1/72 scale:

Supermarine Spitfire
Me. 109
(both same production era or could easily have met in the sky over Britain.)

Hawker Hurricane
He. 111
(similarily, same production era, or could have met in the sky over England.)

I might look to doing these in 1/48 scale, as they would be easier to handle and work with the details, but my modelling space is limited, so I'm unsure.

Thanks. I look forward to any suggestions as well as comments anyone might have.
