F-111 G question
Posted by upnorth on Saturday, September 13, 2003 12:24 PM
Hey all, I just picked up Hasegawa's 1/72 RAAF F-111 G Aardvark kit, and I got a couple of questions about the G variant. I hope someone can help.

First, the kit is a reissue of an earlier FB-111 kit, as such, it still has the astro tracker celestial navigation window on top of the nose between the cockpit and radome. Does the F-111 G still retain this feature? I've yet to find a decent photo that shows enough of that area of the nose to be sure what it looks like thes days, all I know is that there is at least still a hump there.

What other changes were made to turn the FB-111s into G models, what of those changes would be noticeable on a 1/72 model of one?

Finally, what is the color that the RAAF is using on them, I know its overall grey. My guess is gunship grey. Anyone know for sure?

Thanks in advance

Hey Upnorth;
Well my friends that where working the "G's" said that they are no major mods to the plane, the "G's" where the result of SAC & TAC being disbanded and there is really no longer a Stratigic Bombers in the USAF, and all remaining F-111's where painted Gunship Grey when they where stationed at Cannon AFB N.M. that was the F-111F's, and F-111G's(FB-111A's) so the kit is the correct and current if you are doing the G version, I know the F-111C Aussie version is like the FB's but they have a camera pod in their weapons bay on which side I can't rememeber but I pretty sure it's the R/H side, and the Avionics is a little bit different then the FB's too, The USAF retired the Aardvarks back in 91 but I know the Aussies still fly them today

upnorth,
So far as I can discovere the standard paint colour for F111C's here in Australia is indeed Gunship Grey (FS 36118).

There is a "how I did it" story at:
http://people.smartchat.net.au/~ipmsqld/academy_f111c.htm
which is an Acadamy kit not Hsegawa but there are some excellent photos and information there specifically relating to the F111C .

Definitely worth a look,

Cheers, Pete.

Forgot to mention this bit previously:

There is a model club based to Amberly in Queensland (home of the F111 fleet in Australia as I understand it) who should be able to answer any questions concerning the Australian aircraft.
Click on the link below for access:

Thanks for the info guys.

Peter7307:
I'll definitely get in touch with the modeling group in Amberly and ask my questions there too.
