                        Does anyone use Tamiya paints and follow their painting and mixing guides on their kits? If so are you satisfied with the results? Also if you could clear something up for me. I'm assuming that "XF-3:2 + XF-5:1 means 2 parts of the XF-3 and 1 part of XF-5. Correct? It seems obvious but I thought I would ask anyway Shy [8)] I haven't used their paints before but many of you seem to like them. Trying to decide if I should give them a try on my next project.

                        I don't mix colors per Tamiya's instructions typically. With a German WWII aircraft for example, I will do some research to find out what colors were used. I will then use the appropriate RLM color by the different paint manufacturers. This method works for me. I’m not the best paint mixer out there.

                        You are correct about the mixing ratios. I always thought it was a strange to way to list them. Years ago I would use Tamiya paints and mixing guide. It got to be a pain in the neck. I never seemed to mix up the right amount. If I had to mix the same color twice they would never match. I've also seen three part ratios which just makes it harder. Other than that the paint is just fine.

                        Most of the Tamiya kits I've done require ratio mixing on relatively small parts. Given that, I usually find a pre-mixed color that is close and go with that. My models have so many other 'authenticiy' problems as it is. The exact paint color on a small rarely seen part is not really an issue for me.

                        I have tried to do some mixing, but I usually run into the same problems as darrenbb.

                        I really like the Tamya acrylic range, after years of using Humbrol, and having to put up with lots of smelly solvents, acrylics are a nice change. I find they thin well for airbrushing. However....mixing is a pain in the neck, so I usually do some research and find the correct FS or RLM etc colour and purchase that from another manufacturer.

                        I use the following methode to mix Tamiya paint. I take the paint I need to mix put it in a small container and with a syringe I suck it up and squirt it back I repeat this several times and it gives a good result.

                        Last time I use Acrylics from another make, the result was a disaster the paint peal straight of. Even after cleaning the plastic with paintaclean from Revell. Smile [:)]
