Tarmac Base
Posted by Bones-coa on Thursday, September 18, 2003 2:14 PM
I see where a few companys produce 1/48 and 1/72 airfield and tarmac bases. Is there anyone that produces a 1/32 base? I'm running in my head how I want to display my 1/32 Trumpeter A-10 when it's complete. I'll probably end up displaying both the gun and an engine externally...but haven't yet decided how I want to do it. Thanks.

Dana, I don't know if anybody is making the bases in 1/32 but you could combine 2 or 4 of the 1/48 possibly. Or even make your own, I've made a couple of smaller diorama bases using Durham rock hard Water Putty as a coating, doing my best to keep it smooth as I applied it but sanding it down if need be when its dry. Then you can either paint it or use a product called Road System Top Coat, Asphalt St1453 from Woodland Scenics. This stuff is water soluble so you can thin it and brush it on, it ends up looking awfully close to paved surface. Hope I helped.

Dana, if no one makes it. Try posting on the diorama forum. I am sure someone can help you out with a scratch built.

Dana,
I've been in the same quandry, even over basically the same aircraft kit. The only thing that I've found that may be suitable (no one makes 1/32 tarmacs that I've found anywhere) is to use a large sheet of fine-grit sandpaper and paint it grey. Pencil lines can be used to simulate the seams in the concrete very convincingly. Hope this helps you out.

Hey Guy's;
I've used old Xmas gift boxes as Tarmacs for 1/32 scale planes the non-coated insides look and have the texture like a tarmac and it's cheaper to get too, just save the old gift boxes from Xmas and have a complete AFB flight line of concrete at your hands
