Shorts Skyvan - info wanted
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, September 22, 2003 10:54 AM
Does anyone have any information on military use of the Skyvan? I'm sure I've seen pictures of one in use by the British Army in the middle East in the 60's?

I don't know about the military use of it, but at my brother's aviation training school, they refer to the skyvan there as the 'furniture van'...

I don't think the British Army ever used it, but the Skyvan was sold to several air forces including Oman, Austria, Ecuador, Indonesia, Argentina, Nepal, Singapore, Ghana, Yemen and Mexico

The Airfix 'Skyvan' origonally had civil and a military decal option (which escapes me), the 2002 reissue has - NASA and Austrian Airforce options as well as the origonal Olympic Airways set.

Sorry, i don't know of any use of the Shorts "Shoebox" by the British army but does anyone know the color of the stripe on the side of the nasa skyvan? i followed the mix ratio on the kits instructions and it didn't look kinda right to me, a paint number from any paint manufacturer would help loads, cheers in advance........Greg

many thanks guys, You've given me lots to think about here. It seems to be one of those aircraft that's always in the background and until it's mentioned no one thinks about it, then suddenly they're all over the place.
gregers, isn't that stripe a sort of brown black? that's the best way I can think of to describe it. love the Shamrock name, by the way!

Hi Pete thats the colour that i got when i tried it,it just didn't look right to me. that name is how a pal of mine described them (he used to work on them). as for a British army example what about doing a what if model? sounds like a good idea to me and as its my birthday tomorrow i think i'll go and buy me another and try it cos i think it'll look cool in the sand/stone/black scheme. Greg, I think you're right, A 60's British Army scheme should look good. If we as modellers can have 1946 luftwaffe aircraft, why not a Skyvan on trial for the Army?
here's a thought, there are a few NASA models around, and maybe some aftermarket decals, can you get the correct colour from one of them? The Testors U2 I built had blue stripes if memory serves.
So, once again, thanks to all for your help, but it may well be a Brit s**thouse!
