PE question.........
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, September 27, 2003 8:42 AM
All,

Just thinking about the addition of a Photoetch set to my Tamiya Dewoitine........

Since I've never used PE, I wondered if I might garner a few tips from the experts....

I've seen posts on using clear enamel as an adhesive, which sounds like a good idea. Seems to me that gluing most of the parts in place before painting, especially if the parts are to be the same color as the cockpit, would be the best way to approach most of the work, right????

Too, with such things as seatbelts and harnesses, would it work better to glue them into place after the seat has been painted, and afterwards painting the belts by hand?????

Further, it also seems to me that an acrylic primer over already affixed brass parts would be the best way to go, to avoid the trouble and necessity of sanding, etc.????

Please let me know if I'm on the right track........... I realize that some of these questions might call for common sense answers, but I want to gain knowledge from the expertise of the master modelers of this forum.........and do it right the first time.

Thanks a million,

First question; I find that using super-glue and accelerator gives a much more secure bond than clear gloss or Future (some people use it as an adhesive). I usually put a drop of medium super-glue on a post-it note and ,holding the part in fine tweezers, dip the end that will be attached barely into the glue then touch to the main assembly. Before doing this I take a paint brush with some accelerator on it and touch the main assembly area with it where I'm going to be glueing the part. This way once I touch the glued part to it the bond is instantly hard.
Second question; Yes it just makes sense to attach all the small parts that will be painted a base color first.
Third question; Paint the seats and harnesses seperately then assemble the parts. For seat belts PE can be okay but you can get much better results using heavy foil like from a wine bottle and adding brass buckles to it useing super-glue. In this picture you see a resin seat with foil belts and brass buckles.

Fourth question; see second question.
Hope this helps.

Swanny is right on the mark! The only thing I think I do differently is I apply the accelerator after the part is in place. A touch-n-flo applicator, or the eye of a large sewing needle mounted in an old paint brush handle works great for the accelerator. On your paint adhesion question, I dip my brass PE in strong white vinegar before they are painted. It cuts any oil and lightly etches the parts.Smile [:)]

Swanny I just relized who you are! The picture you supplied for reference is Kosters 1/48 FW-200, correct. I saw your review of that kit somewhere, can you put the link up so I can see it again? I'm sure anyone who hasn't seen it would love to! The only thing that keeps me from building Koster Enterprise kits is the price, but to see one done justice to is a real treat.Big Smile [:D]

ROFL
Woody, the in-box review and a very extensive construction article are on my web site. The in-box review can also be found on http://www.modelingmadness.com
You can get the Koster kit from Great Models or go direct to Bill Koster and save a few bucks. There is also a link to Bill's e-mail on my site at the front page listing for the Condor. The Condor was a great kit, easy to build, well engineered and when I screwed up a part Bill was real quick to get me a replacement - he's a great guy to work with.
