A quick survey: which is the best?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, February 13, 2003 1:46 PM
Take a minute and let us all know which aircraft you think is the greatest of all time in each of five categories. The categories are simple:

1. the greatest propeller driven fighter of all time
2. the greatest propeller driven bomber of all time
3. the greatest jet fighter of all time
4. the greatest jet bomber of all time
5. the most important aircraft ever

The categories are yours to define. In category 5 it could be aircraft type ( e.g. the B-29 ) or it could be a specific aircraft ( e.g. Enola Gay, Glamorous Glennis ). I think it would be interesting and informative to hear everyone's different opinions. If you want to just leave a list, great! If you want to tell us all why you feel that way, that is great too!

Man, how open ended.... how do you define "Best?" Better to say "favourite," I suppose. Still:
1. the greatest propeller driven fighter of all time

FW-190

2. the greatest propeller driven bomber of all time

B-24

3. the greatest jet fighter of all time

Don't know, we haven't stopped using jets yet. <g> F-15

4. the greatest jet bomber of all time

B-52... still soldiering on.

5. the most important aircraft ever

Well the P 47 might have been the first US Multi role fighter, but the Hawker Hurricane was a fighter, a bomber, a tank buster (with 40mm bofors under each wing) and a night fighter, all before the US even entered the war! (well ok, the Mk 2D was a little after the US entered the war). It also won the Battle of Britain, without which, none of the US action in Europe would have ever happened.

So here is my list:

Hawker Hurricane
B 17G
F 16
A4 Skyhawk
C-47/DC-3

OK, here goes....

1.) Supermarine Spitfire I/II - Largely responsible for saving England during the Battle of Britain. Without which no-one could have launched bomber raids into nazi Germany. (Apologies to you Hurricane fans, but the Spits did go after the German fighters...)

2.) B-17 Flying Fortress - Beautiful airplane. Breakthrough in multi-engined bomber technology that lead the way for all others.

3.) MiG-21- More built than any other jet fighter.

4.) B-52 Stratofortress - The "newest" one is over 40 years old. We DEFINATELY got our money's worth out of that design! I would go so far as to call it the greatest American combat aircraft of all time...

5.) Wright 1903 Flyer - Someone else would have done it if the Wrights didn't, but they did and made all others possible.

Not asked was best transport - the C-130 Hercules for the same reason as the B-52. In production since 1954, and no end in sight, we got our money's worth there too.

Regards,

Pat

Well the Hurricane did shoot down more aircraft and were more numerous than the Spit!

And interestingly enough, Richard Pierce actually flew before the Wright brothers, in Otago, New Zealand. Only it has been rather hard to prove it, as he was just a very clever inventor and never sought any recognition.

there's a loaded question if ever I heard one

prop fighter: The Spitfire and Hurricane should share this one, together they held the line and bought the allies time to build forces and strategies. without them, there wouldn't have been a chance.

Prop bomber: I'm giving this one to the Avro Lancaster, Particularly the "Dam Buster" variants

Jet Fighter: This is a real tough one for me, overall I'd have to give it to the MiG-21 but the Hawker Hunter could just as easily hold the spot too.

Jet Bomber: The BUFF

Most important aircraft: DC-3

To nzgunnie:

mmmmm... Tell that to the French..! To them, Clement Ader was the first with his 'Eole'... (No more than a little jump, not a real flight like the Wright Brothers, though!) ;-)

To say which is best, you must first establish the criteria. Best in performance, most advanced, most significant contribution to aviation, most significant impact on the out come of a war, etc, etc.
That being said, I'm going to go with impact on war.
P-51 Mustang, it's performance and range allowed it to escort Bombers deep into enemy territory.
B-17 became the icon of American airpower being the first strategic bomber and it's ability to bring it's crew back.
F-4 Phantom was the backbone of the USAF and Navy during Vietnam and all the top scoring aces flew them.
B-52 the energizer bunny of the bomber world, keeps going and going and goingBig Smile [:D] from Vietnam thru Armagedon.
Wright flyer, where it all started.

I noticed nobody said my choice for #3. But swing wing design maximized both high and low speed performance. And when they finally got a decent engine (and avionics) in the D's they were awesome. They are only being replaced by the F/A-18 because of age. The F/A-18 is a compromise plane, decent at 2 jobs but not great at any one.

Therriman,
Amen to that re: the F-18. Pretty soon they're gonna put a radome on top of it and call it an AWACS!
