airfix update! updated!!
Posted by r13b20 on Sunday, October 5, 2003 5:10 PM
Well folks I couldn't resist. I bought the 1/24th P-51. Except for one missing part and a broken canopy frame, this looks like it could be descent. Seperate machine guns, optional gear, an engine, a pilot, removable panels, ammo belts, etc..... Now if it will go together as good as it looks? Maybe $50 wasn't too much for it. I already contacted the company and received a responce on the parts issue so.... I'll let you all know how it goes. Bob

Well I received the parts I wanted from Airfix. They are just what I needed! Now I have to finish the 1/48 p-40 before I get to work on this beast. Don't I? bob

The plastic is very soft, be careful how you cut/scribe it.
aside from that, ENJOY!

I happen to be working on this kit also. It will probably take me a while to build though - I've been bitten by the superdetail bug! This kit just begs for great details, and there is an absolute void for aftermarket parts. :lol

If you are looking for some good references for this kit, let me know. I've done a little homework on it and came up with a few good website articles.

Good luck with the build. are you going to post pics when its done? i have one of these somewhere in that mess i call a modeling room and am going to do an RAF stang with it, (if i can find it LoL) probably the all silver one called DOOLEYBIRD that was the subject of the Matchbox 1/72 kit. Greg

hey scooter, any help is greatfully accepted! Did you find any missing or broken parts like I did? The box sounded like a spray can, it rattled so much! Good luck with yours, mine is on hold until I receive the replacements. Working on P-40c from academy in 1/48th.

I've had a few broken parts, but nothing a little Tenax and filler won't cure. The worst damage I had was that the canopy frame was broken - probably just like yours. It is a pretty fragile piece and Airfix didn't exactly package the kit very well.

I had a fistful of parts that came loose from the sprue, so I couldn't tell what number each loose part was. I think I've sorted them all out correctly, but it was pretty aggrevating!

Which part are you missing anyway? Since I'm scratch building some of my part I imagine I will have a few left-overs for the part bin. Maybe I'll have what you need?

thanks scooter. I'm missing the wind shield (forward portion of the canopy). I've yet to receive it in the mail but I expect it to take awhile anyway.Because I have to wait for it to come across the "pond". Keep us posted, with pics, maybe?

i got a part replacement from airfix within 4 days in europe, so anything up to two weeks is normal.

Happy modeling! That's the biggest Mustang kit. The P51D Walk Around by Squadron will be very helpful in a project that big. Good luck!

T-34, sorry it's Airfix ( humbrol owns them now). they have a website at www.airfix.com. Less than a month for the replacements. UK to USA, and free! I like Airfix now! :)

Many years ago I bought the Dornier 217 night fighter kit.

In itself a very poor model, but maybe a hood starting point if you fancy a challange.

Any, I digress, the kit was missing it's canopy, so I wrote to Airfix, who sent me, not the canopy, but a whole new kit, and all for free!

Glad to see they still have the right approach to customer complaints!

They might not always be the best detailed kits, but they are very cheap, and with a little work can produce excellent models.
