P-40B Markings
Posted by roadkill_275 on Monday, October 6, 2003 6:03 PM
Okay , I've reached the point where I need to start thinking of paint schemes for my P-40B. What I need to know is what shade of black was used on the P-40's captured by Japan? and what markings did they have? I have narrowed my choices down to a US machine, A Russian machine and a Japanese machine. For the Russian machine, is there anything I need to add besides the antenna?

i don't know if this will help or hinder you, but...
I have two items of reference, both British. Aeroplane monthly (Feb 2003) edition states that the P 40's used by the Japanese were aircraft captured on the Phillipines and Java & seem to have been mostly 'E' models. It is rumoured that some were used to defend Rangoon in March '43. There is a picture of a P 40 in Japanese markings. Although in B&W it seems to be all over olive green. The
'meatballs' have white borders.
The Russian reference comes from Scale aviation modeller international, (feb 02). It shows an ex RAF machine. A tomahawk 11B, the equivalent of a P 40C,
( the difference from a 'B' seems to have been to do with fuel tanks). The aircraft is ex RAF serial AN281 and now carries white 24 behind the star on the left side.
Operated by 154 IAP Red Banner Baltic fleet air force, Leningrad 1942.
Colours are Dark Earth with the RAF dark green overpainted in Russian Dark green, undersides repainted in underside blue. Black spinner, plain stars under wings, non on top, fuselage stars outlined in yellow.
There are two antenna wires from the fin to the fuselage, and a ring & bead sight in front of the cockpit.
I hope at least some of the above helps!

Heres some Japanese P-40s. On the main page you can find some B-17's, Brewster Buffaloes and Hurricanes too!

The Japanese actually did capture 1 B-17 that i know of, i have seen the picture of it on the wall in the Yokota AB AMC terminal in the cafetaria there, it had a plaque on explaining that the plane was there when American Occupation forces arrived there just after the war, they actually repaired the nose which had been damaged prior to its capture early in the war, it had a nose like a Betty but no paint on it .

That is one cool site. Now I'll have to do one of those captured B-17s. or maybe the Hurricane. And definately the Bf-109 and the ones captured by us. Oh no, now I have another collection to build. I hope I live long enough to finish!!! But seriously, thanks for the info. That certainly clarified things for me and helped me decide on a paint scheme for my Otaki P-40E. when I finally get around to doing it. Ah well, so many schemes, so little time!!
