E-2C etc
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, October 7, 2003 10:05 AM
Has anyone built the CollectAire 1/48th scale E-2C Hawkeye or A-5 Vigilante? What did you think? Worth the huge pricetag? Level of detail? I've never tried a wholly resin kit before, and am wondering how these measure up. Thanks for the input.

I personally am sceptical of full resin kits, bit and pieces of resin for detailing are one thing, but resin has a few drawbacks that I think make it questionable for use in full kits.

It tends to shrink and distort with time and doesn't bear its own weight well. Structures like wings and vertical tails will sag and warp eventually.

Resin also does not always take paint well, it really depends on how they made that particular batch of resin, it can vary greatly from batch to batch.

The worst thing about resin is air bubbles under the surface of seemingly flawless parts. Imagine attaining a competition grade finish on a model you threw that kind of money at only to have a big peice of wing or fuselage flake away and reveal a big crater right under the surface.

Hmm.. I didn't realize all the drawbacks. Like I alluded, I am a little hesitant about the whole kit being made from resin material; it just doesn't seem right. I wish the mainstream kit maufacturers would look at these subjects in a larger scale (1/48th) than they're usually seen. They've certainly had good success with other models that are even bigger (Monogram's B-17, Revell's B-1B, Italeri's AC-130...) I may be in the minority, but I am interested in seeing more options for these aircraft in 1/48. They may not be as sexy as the Tomcat or Hornet or even Flanker, but still are important subjects that I want to include in my 1/48 carrier dioramas. Bit of a soapbox, eh? :) Anyway, thanks for your take on resin kits.
