P47 cockpit interior
Posted by ironokie on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 5:05 PM

I'm starting the 1/48 Tamiya Razorback and other than the resin seat, I'm going OOB. The paint called out for the base color of the cockpit interior is Tamiya X-15 "flat green", which is acrylic. I have decided to use all enamels on this build with perhaps an acrylic wash. As far as the interior color I have Testors green and also Interior Green, (a lighter shade), and can't decide which would be a closer match to the Tamiya flat green. What say you?

This probably should have been posted in the paintig thread so please pardon.

Go with interior green !

Tamiya is great but ... not with providing color references!

There are tons of cockpit pictures available. I will combine some set and provide on the P-47 GB within next few days.

Tamiya P-47 is just great as it is. I am building "M" now and the only thing I used was a seat belt set from the Eduard PE. I just wasted the whole set just for seatbelts, but it was not necessary to use them anyway. Tamiya did an exceptional job with detailing cockpit.

Thanks gzt, Exellent photo of a well built interior. I'll be using your pic as a reference.

According to "P-47 Thuunderbolt in detail & scale", T-Bolts built by Republic had the interior painted in what they called a "dull dark green".  It is definitely a darker color than interior green.  There is a color chip in the Osprey Modelling "Modelling the P-47 Thunderbolt" book.  To my eyes, it looks like a green with maybe a touch of black in it.

This is a good info. Thanks.

I think using interior green would be justified since the color will fade anyway, plus if viewed in such dark environment darker will loose a lot of details. Having black details on top of dark green may create very dark effect and all the work on the cockpit details would be lost in darkness Big Smile [:D]

When I saw this cockpit of P-47N (Norma) I almost painted my cockpit with this scheme

but I decided to go with interior green what gave me pretty good contrast and keep everything very close to what I saw on other aircraft (P-47s)

Yup, it's most definitely a darker color.  Out of the bottle, Model Master's Euro Dark Green is a close match for Dark Dull Green, but I usually add a drop or two of black to get a bit closer to the original color.

I agree I like to use Model master's Euro1 dark green

When in doubt just build it. Mark http://www.ipmslivonia.org/ipms/

I'll third the Model Master Euro Dark Green.  It's the closest match out of the bottle that I've found.

It just so happens I ordered this particular book on 8/25 and much to my disapointment it has yet to arrive. I don't know what's taking Amazon.com so long, they are saying Sept 4th.

Thanks everyone for the input.

To add to the Dull Dark Green topic- Medium Green 42 is also a good match. It is the WWII AAF color that later became Euro I Green 34092. Polly Scale, Humbrol, Gunze, and most other paint manufacturers make one of these colors in their product lines. Only P-47s built by a subcontractor- Curtiss I believe- used 34151 Interior Green in the cockpit. And those birds were kept stateside for training duties.

See the P-47 section of this link for more info.
