I have a Revell/Monogram Tornado IDS 1/32. (skill3)
Any thoughts (pro or con) out there.
How are the parts & quality.
Any sugjestions on paint type, glue type, etc.
Is this project to difficult for a first (since my early years as a kid)

My dad built the kit a few yrs ago and from what I remember it is a straight forward build but then again I build quarter scale.
You may have to watch out for the main wing assemblies since they are delicate. Also the aelirons have a weak pivot point. Some parts may have to be dry fitted before final assembly.
Main landing gear need to be strengthened just a lil bit due to the weight and awkwardness of a/c
Glues???, thats up to you on how you feel. I personally use Tenax 7R liquid glue. The paint scheme is up to you. Just check you references for the variant that you are building.

I think it depends on which issue of the kit you've got. It was issued once and Flightpath came up with one of the most extensive photoetched sets I've ever seen to detail it.

It was re-issued a couple of years back under Revell Germany and from what I understand, many new parts were included to render the old Flightpath photo etchings largely needless. I saw inside the box of the re-issue and its beautiful, my only criticism is that it comes with German navy markings but theres no Kormoran anti shipping missiles in the kit.

As for the glue, well that depends on what assemblies you're working on at the time, at 1/32, definitely use CA glue all around for strength. the rest is totally reliant on your glue preferences.

I have both the old revell and the latest offering (which I believe is what you have) in almost built state. The older version is fairly poor and most of the panel lines need to be scribed in, crappy fit, crappy incorrect detail, etc.. The newest version has much better panel detail, cockpit interior, but only german markings. Curiosly, the side of the moldings the recessed panel lines disapper and you have scribe then in (except the front end where the bottom detail is void). I'm applying the decent british markings from the old onto the new. since I'm not interested in the Italian or german version, I will make the older kit into a flying desert storm British version (minimum markings) with Paragon flaps extended and gear up. Resin seats and photoetch interior really helped the new kit, but even the latest revell has fit problems with the intakes, vertical tail, and front/midbody seam. Typical Revell. They are completely different kits and the latest one takes much less work to make pretty then the older one

got carried away in details. It's not an easy kit to build, grab the putty and sandpaper whenever you open the box. Painting is pretty straightforward with references and model master paints. Email me for more info info if you're interested, since I have both sitting around ready for painting

ive just bought the newer GR mk1, royal air force variant.
looks like a very improved release, nice details throughout.
this is my fav jet, as i normally build 1/48 scale, so a 1/32 project will only happen once.
ive done a bit of research and ive found that CAM decals have re-released the old TAC scale detail set, and they also do a nice set of alarm missiles. also, yes the old flightpath detail sets are possibly redundant, but i understand mr parkins has beefed them up to a GR4 variant and included some extras.
ill be purchsing the set and will post my views on it asap.
as for paragon, good luck, if you can find the flaps and spoiler sets, get them, they are nice. also flightpath do amazing RAF weapons in 1/32 scale.
hope this has helped. email me if you need any pointers on this aircraft, ive got a brother who has served with 15 Sqn, RAF, since 1983, and ive got some very good resources on the 'fin'.

I too built the earlier version, it was not too accurate ( I used to work on them!) Not sure how good the new one is, but get hold of all the photo's you can & compare them with the kit, that'll show you what's wrong/missing etc.
Does it have intake trunking? the old one didn't, covers are easy to make to hide that fault though, on the real thing they're plastic covered canvas. also, where the wings swivel into the fuselage there should not be huge gaps! Good Luck

correction: i will build 2, 1/32 scale jets, the GR1and that sweet 1/32 academy 'Charlie' Hornet, WOW!!!!! check the thread out, it is outstanding, anyone got info on any canuck decals, maybe 410 sqn anniversary?...............i only hope the UK doesnt have to wait long for a release!
