F4U-6 or AU-1 Corsair Kit
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, October 16, 2003 10:18 AM

I am looking for a kit for the F4U-6 or AU-1 (I believe the same aircraft just different designation). I saw one in the gallery at Aircraft Resource Center. It said that it was a Hasegawa kit but I am unable to find it at Squadron.com. I did a quick search as I am out of time and have to get to work[:0]. Is anyone familiar with this kit?

I am wanting to do a USMC Corsair in the grey paint scheme and I am assuming that the only Corsairs painted like this was the AU-1.

Thanks,
Steve

Yes, there is actually a 1/48 scale Hasegawa AU-1. I'm surprised that squadron.com doesn't have it. If there are any good hobby stores in your area (Like a Hobbytown USA) you might ask if they can special order one for you. The Hobbytown out here will order a model for you if they don't have it on the shelf. The Hasegawa Corsair series are probably the nicest late model F4U's around. I hope this helps some.

I will check HobbyTown for the kit. One finally opened in Oklahoma City. Thanks a lot for the info.

You live in OKC!?! I live down in Moore! I believe Hobbytown in Norman has the kit you are looking for. I was down there earlier this week and I think I saw one. The new store location is off of Main Street by Hastings. I've ordered kits from there before so even if they don't have it, they shoud be able to order one for you no problem.

I live on the Oklahoma City/Yukon border. Nice to see someone else from OK here. According to their website, Hobbytown just opened a store 6 miles from my house. I haven't been able to check it out yet. I will run over there when I get the time and see if they have the kit or if they can get it for me. Thanks a lot.

jetav8r,

I bought my Hasegawa AU-1 from Squadron about a year ago. The Hasegawa kit # is 09395:2400. And, you're correct in assuming that the F4U-6 and the AU-1 are the same. The Marines were originally going to call the new version the F4U-6, but, after considering how the plane was going to be used (primarily as a ground attack and utility aircraft), the decision was made to redesignate it to AU-1. It was the last variant of the Corsiar to be used by the US military, as the F4U-7 (the last Corsair variant produced) was sold exclusively to the French Navy. I hope you have good luck in finding the kit. If you can't, just e-mail me, and I'll get one to you, as there are many of them on the shelves at various locations here in Indianapolis, IN.
