1/48 USN carrier top?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, October 16, 2003 11:10 AM
Just wondering if anyone out there has modeled my dream project yet....? A scratchbuilt 1/48th scale flat top for a modern USN aircraft carrier to display your models on. I guess it would be, like, 20-some feet long.
If anyone actually has, then you probably ought to get more sun. But seriously, what's the largest "base" you've made to display aircraft on? I'm thinking about someday making just the bow or stern sections (roughly 3-6 feet long) out of plywood complete with cranes/fire engines, tie-down points, arrestor cables, LSO or shooters' nests, elevator, catapult, etc. So far my largest is only about 16x20 inches, enough for a Phantom plus mule.

There was an article in FSM a few years back about a scratch built 1/72
scale USS Nimitz complete with air group. It was near 20 feet long!

I remember the enterprise in FSM, 15 ft long or so.

Actually, there have been both Enterprise and Nimitz in 1/72 scale featured in FSM. The Nimitz ran in the August 1987 issue. This was an operating model that was radio-controlled and could be sailed around in ponds. It had a tape deck inside blasting out Navy tunes, the works.

The Enterprise is a house-bound beauty, featured in the March 1997 issue.

I don't know of any 1/48 scale "super carrier" models in existence, although there are some 1/48 scale museum carrier displays of smaller class ships.

Paul, didn't your model club build a 1/72 scale carrier, that is on display at the Pensacola Navel Air Museum? I remember reading somewhere that the Bong Chapter of an IPMS club built the model. Or did they just build the aircraft for the display?

The local aerosciences museum has the model of the Akagi that was used in Tora Tora Tora.... it is 1/72 scale and takes up a good chunk of a room....
