B-17 variant?

That B-17 still exists... kinda.

It was at the New England Air Museum for years, but when they got hit by a tornado in the 80's it got lopped in half by a falling roof beam just aft of the wing. The plane then went down to Reilly Aviation in Kissimmee FL to be restored. This is about a decade ago now. I'm not sure her current whereabouts, but I know she was slated to be restored to B-17G standard.

Cool photo though. Nice job photoshopping out the 4 Wrights. The cool thing about the real photo is that the 4 radials ARE SHUT DOWN! That Turboprop was the only thing powering the airplane. Pretty impressive!

As for my favorite B-17 variant, I'd have to go with the YB-40. There's just something cool about the "escort battleship" concept.

LOL I love it!!! I think there shouldve been a fisherman sitting on the wing though. Say, a Vietnam pilot taking a break Would make an interesting talk piece at a model show too.

DaveB is correct about the photo being a fake. The JB-17G was the original test bed aircraft for the P&W XT-34P engines. The XB-38 had liquid cooled Allison -V 710-89 inline engines used in trials. Hope this helps. Neat photo, though

Thats a real pic... kindof. Someone has used photoshop to remove the 4 Wrights from the wing of the B-17. I have the same pic in a book. It is the same aircraft and wing number with the exact same back drop... but my pic has the 4 Wrights. The 4 main engines in my pic however are NOT turning and have the propellers feathered. The plane was called a JB-17G and was used by Pratt & Whitney to test their XT-34P turboprops. I also understand that Wright had a version of it to test out their 5500 hp liquid cooled radial Typhoon engines.
