Need Some Advice!!
Posted by roadkill_275 on Wednesday, October 22, 2003 12:58 PM
I need to know if it is possible to do these conversions and if there are conversion sets available:
DC-9 to C-9A,B
737 to T-43A

I would also like to know if anyone knows if there were any conversions made to the RNZAF Boeing 727? I have decided to quit looking for kits of these in 1/72 and try them in 1/144. I know Kendall made a kit of the Boeing 727 in 1/72 does any one have a comment about this one? Also does any one know what the RNZAF called their 727s' ?

roadkill,

As far as I know, there were very little external differences between the DC-9 and the C-9 Nightingale. The SOES (Station Operations & Engineering Squadron) squadron at Cherry Point, NC, had a C-9, and I couldn't see any differences externally between it and the DC-9 (other than the paint job), although I'm sure there are a few. Internally, though, there's a whole slew of differences, especially if the C-9 is set up for medevac use. Are you planning on showing the interior?

I'm not sure about the T-43. The pictures I've seen of one showed it to have a huge nose radome for the radar set used in it. I think it's used to train airborne radar operators, but I don't remember for sure. If you do find the conversion sets, post some pictures of the finished products. We'd all like to see them!

I don't know if this info is of any use to you but VEB plasticart did a large 727 series 100, i belive it was 1/96th but i could be wrong and revell did a DC9 series 10 (i think)that seemed around the same scale in swissair markings though i last saw this kit when i was in my teens and i can't remember exact details of this kit but i do remember that the box had a "stretched" DC9 on the front. the T-43 conversion is possable, i did it folowing an article in a modeling mag some years ago. if i find the mag i'll let you know. hope this helps, Greg

I forgot to mention, the C9 civilian equivilent is the DC9 series 30 and the T 43 is (so i am told) the 737 series 200. Greg

A good place to check is the USAF Airman Magazine site they have the inventory addition in January of every year, but on the sad note the AF retired the C-9's just this past month on Oct 1, so you might hve to get the refences from last years addition they also have the T-43's in them too, also they are coded as another type of transport besides the T-43 the have a C- designation but I can't rememeber I'll try to find my copy and get their website for you if you need it

thanks guys. I used to live near Mather AFB (I can't beleive they closed it!!) and got to see the T-43s' all the time. When they closed Mather they Transfered the T-43s' to Randolph AFB where they all got a real pretty paint job and they now carry the RA on the tail. When I moved to Texas in 1987 I started attending airshows at Carswell AFB, There were C-9s' there that were from Dallas NAS. I've seen all three marks of the C-9.
