Hello Jose, This isn't going to answer your question. But consider getting an after market cockpit kit for this model. The kit cockpit is all wrong. I believe there are two manufacturers who make these now and they are Black Box and Verlinden. Sorry I can't answer your question on the hinges. Good luck!

Hello all!

I just got the f4u-4, and it looks gorgeous inside the box. But I have a question about putting this thing together. The model comes with photoetch hinge parts and a post, and instructs me to cut the posts down to size during assembly of the hinges. How should I flatten the ends of the post after cutting it down to size?

ranger, never heard of any USMC camo Corsairs in the South Pacific. Try the website for the Naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola and see if they have a contact for research items. Maybe they'd have something definitive for you.

? for all you F-4U Corsair lovers.

I had a conversation with a WWII Navy SeaBee who claims he saw Corsairs in camo paint scheems in the South Pacific. He thought they were Marine corsairs, but this is not confirmed. He described them as OD/dark green/yellowish-tan on top, and light blue/grey on the bottom.

A search through the Marine Corps archives has failed to turn up any evidence of said camo Corsairs.

Could they have been Austrailian, British, or New Zealand Corsairs? Has anybody else ever heard of camo Corsairs in the South Pacific in WWII?

It sounds like we finally have a decent 1/32 scale corsair. I'm waiting for mine to arrive. Any day now, I hope! rangerj

Thanks, guys, for all the great input. Anyone know where the best price might be for this kit at this time? No such thing as a "local hobby shop" for me. I only get to REAL hobby shops if I'm traveling somewhere on business and have the opportunity to go looking for a place listed in FSM or appearing in the local yellow pages. Otherwise, it's mail order for me. Your comments on prices and sources would be sincerely welcomed.

I've got some info on Marion Carl's bird in Sq. 222 post war. My dad was in his squadron and they flew -4's.

Well, if you're doing an F4U-4, there's not much choice other than overall Gloss Sea Blue. I do have some ref pix of an F4U-4 at NAS Olathe circa 1956 in an interesting Light Gull Gray / Insignia White / International Orange scheme.
But I'm probably going to do Capt. Walsh's Okinawa veteran (one of the two choices on the decal sheet) in overall Gloss Sea Blue.

Yup, they fold, but you have to leave a piece loose on the wing in the down position and remove it for the up position. The wing is hinged, though. No idea how strong it is yet (it's still in the box!) but I don't have a whole lot of confidence in it. I'm doing mine down anyway, so I'm not even going to bother with the folding mechanism.

that's great someone finially put the ole Revell kit to rest, and Yes I do own a 72 'Cuda had 2 others too a '69 & a '73 but came upon hard times and had to clear the barn and sell the ones I've owned the longest + a divorce from the 1st wife also helped rid the stalls but I still have my model collection & my warpped sence of humor

You know, I'd kinda like to give some of the new "braille scale" kits a try. When I got back into modelling seriously, about 10 years ago, I tried a few of the 1/32 Hasegawa kits. I figured that the larger scale would be easier. I was satisfied with the kits (hadn't seen a modern-day kit). When I couldn't get the 1/32 Me 262, I ordered the DML kit. I've been doing 1/48 since then.
But with all the raves about the latest generation of 1/32 kits, I'm tempted. Just have to get a BIGGER apartment !

According to "Detail & Scale," the Corsair had solid floors beginning with the F4U-4.

Here's a Q, fellas:
I'm aware of the floorless versions, but did the F4U-4 have a solid floor? I ask this only because Trumpeter goes out of its way to mention a "new cockpit floor" and "simplified bucket seat" as features of the updated -4 Corsair.
Any ideas? Did the -4 have a solid floor?

From what I understand, there are already resin cockpits available for the 1D, without a floor. Prices I've seen are in the $20-$25 range.

I'm still waiting to see if my local Hobby Lobby gets any in. I would love to build that thing! From the pics I've seen of the kit, it just looks marvelous. And to think I was about to pick up the old Revell Dinosaur.

'Cuda, this baby ain't got nuthin' to do with that old Revell relic! It's all-new, and magnificent, as far as I'm concerned. And not much more expensive than what Revell's selling their antique for these days.

If you want a mostly accurate, well-molded Corsair in 1/32, I don't think there's really much of a debate now which is better, unless you're into the nostalgia of building the old Revell 1/32 kits.

Don't get me wrong: I love the old Revells (I just bought a 1/32 Me 262 A-1a Kanonenvogel last week!), but there's just no comparison between their old veteran and the new Trumpeter Corsairs.

By the way, do you own a '72 'Cuda? I had a '70 Duster 340...sure do miss that little Mopar.
But I've always longed for a 1970 Hemi Cuda... Tongue [:P]

You guys had BOTH Corsairs out a coupla weeks ago? No fair! We just got the F4U-4 in this week.
The canopy that came with my kit is as clear as any I've ever seen. The only frosted bits are the frames. Hopefully this will be consistant in everybody's kits.

The ejector pin marks are quite pronounced, but they're all in discreet locations, so no worries there. Other than that, there's a wee bit more flash than you'd expect from a modern Tamiya or Hasegawa kit, but nothing worth griping about.

It all looks good to me! Big Smile [:D]

Yeah my local shop received the Trumps Corsair about a few weeks ago.
I have not yet peeked into the box but does the canopy have a hazy look to it??
Why I'm asking because trumps Wildcat is an over all good kit except for the canopy. For some reason the kits canopy/windscreen sections have a hazy appearance Sad [:(]

Its a shame though, like I have said the Wildcat is nice lookin. With them retooling her, you'd think they would have caught that lil over sight

Just picked up Trumpeter's new 1/32 F4U-4 Corsair. Looks real good in the box.
I haven't built a Corsair since Revell issued their "Baa Baa Black Sheep" Pappy Boyington version decades ago. Gonna be nice having a big four-bladed Corsair to chase my Tamiya Zero around the ceiling!

Since it seems that Trumpeter releases in Japan pretty much coincide with world-wide releases, if you're looking for for this kit, I bet it's on the shelves in your country, too! (The F4U-1D was released last month)
