Electronics advice sought
Posted by delov on Wednesday, October 29, 2003 11:29 PM
I have lots of two and four engine unbilt kits like He-177, An-12, C-130 to name a few, that are big enough to be motorized and lighted. I have motorized a few of my prop models but I wish I was able to do more. For example, when I press the button the engine starts in full throttle right away and I wonder if there is a way to increase the rpms gradually via some chip or something I can get at Radio Shack. The other thing is, can I build a remote that would do away with the need of a physical circuit breaker? I mean, some of these beasts in 1/72 scale have a loooooot of room...

I am probably way over my head with this but I wonder if it can be done inexpensively.

I have a Vickers Vimmy twin engine nightmare in the works. I installed the motors in the engines and run the wires to the fuselage and I am working on a sort of a switch that I can disguise as a part of the frame. Will post pictures promptly when done.

Thanks,
Borislav

A simple potentiometer would do the trick. This works similar to the dimmer switch for your car's interior lights. You can 'turn' your props up or down with a knob, and are sold at Radio Shack. As for the type of pot switch would depend on the motors and how many you have...
As for a remote, I'm sure there is something, but I'm not sure I can be of any help on that one!

what you could do is build the motors into the aircraft and place the heavy gear, including the power supply, in the base.
This uses contact pins run through the wheels which means that you can use the base for more than 1 aircraft (peg board arrangement).
You dont have to worry about any switches on the aircraft, or fitting in any bulky electronics.

You can remote control engine speeds with an RC electric aircraft motor speed control unit. Your local hobby shop can fix you up with one, and you will not need the large battery since you will not be flight loading the motors. These units plug directly into a subminiature radio receiver for remote control. You do not need a second battery for the receiver either.

There are a wide variety of these devices at hobby shops that specialize in RC planes or RC cars (usually the car versions are a bit cheaper, but larger). In your application you could also parallel the motors onto one controller.

Good luck,
Bruce
